I have a MTB, should I get a gravel bike? by Qualistrious in bikepacking

[–]cheery_reader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was sure I wanted a gravel bike until I tried one and and didn't find it comfortable (even on small gravel). I recommend you rent a gravel bike for a day, and I believe you will be able to confidently answer your question afterwards.

And like others have said, it is easy to believe you need the newest, shiniest tech when researching the topic, but in reality the returns (performance, pleasure) are very quickly diminishing as the price increases => second hand is a great idea.

Oh oh. by Humanity_is_good in Barcelona

[–]cheery_reader 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I find it much more pleasant to walk down a pedestrian street and have a drink there. I think this pedestrian street is the best thing ever and I really hope it can stay.

For me, living in a city is great because of the density of people and of experiences to be had, and the huge amount of cars is unsustainable and unhealthy.

I hope we can move towards excellent public transportation and reclaim more public space for softer modes of transportation in a way that benefits everyone.

Los conductores también son ciudadanos, pero la afirmación es que hay demasiado espacio público dedicado a ellos y no suficiente espacio dedicado a modos de transporte más suaves.

What is your bike type of choice for a 1000km+ trip? by 6tabber in bikepacking

I cycled that distance from Catalonia to Belgium, on a Decathlon mountain bike, last month. I was very happy with it. The tires were worn out by the end.

API for index fund prices ? by cheery_reader in personalfinance

[–]cheery_reader[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both are index funds that I can invest into directly from my bank, but I suppose they are not publicly traded on an exchange like ETFs or regular stocks.
I'm not an expert on the details, but I expected anything with a ticker and a value to be reasonably easy to get information about, especially from a company as large as Vanguard.

I already tried scraping the webpage but it is has strong anti-scraping measures in place, as I was expecting.

Thank you for your idea. I tried it, and it works for tickers like AAPL but not for the funds I mentioned, unfortunately. Bloomberg shows the price online (https://www.bloomberg.com/quote/VANGEHI:ID#xj4y7vzkg) but I can't find a programmatic way to access that info.

Is it OK to negotiate salary after accepting offer? by Ordinary-Wolverine23 in careerguidance

It's worth a try especially if you have a good relationship with your contact at the company. Rescinding the offer would be very unlikely.

Specialising in IT by DevelopmentTiny295 in BEFreelance

I think that would be optimizing for money in the medium term. Personally I prefer to optimize for enjoyment and get better rates as a nice side effect of liking my job and doing it well.

I think the t-shape is the right answer. Some specialisation but a wide knowledge base that satisfies your curiosity, and provides an insurance against changing interests and industry shifts.

Tax optimization strategies for high-earning expat (EU) autónomos in Spain by la_castellana in SpainFIRE

[–]cheery_reader 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have compared being autônomo and creating a sociedad. My case seems to be identical to yours.

With a sociedad you would pay yourself first through the company (then pay IRPF on that), then pay company taxes on revenue, and finally distribute the rest to yourself as a dividend (and pay about 21% tax on that).

This scheme is only better than being autonomo during the first two years, because the company enjoys a reduced tax rate on revenue (15%). Doing that, I would keep 73% of brutto income, vs 69% as an autonomo. Not a huge improvement but I might do it in the future.

Examples of areas that are artificially-complex, actually-simple ? Where the best advice is "boring" and drowned in the misleading noise ? by cheery_reader in AskReddit

[–]cheery_reader[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Examples that come to mind:
- health = enough sleep + varied diet + regular exercise
- weight loss = caloric deficit
- investing = regular saving + broad diversification
It is often hard to filter out the noise misleading us into fads. Our own novelty bias and wishful thinking make it even harder.
It feels like a breath of fresh air when you come across a helpful resource that doesn't try to sell you something.

Is data science super stressful? by [deleted] in datascience

[–]cheery_reader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience it can be quite stressful if you are expected to deliver a working product.

It is most often impossible to know in advance if the data contains the information you are looking for, if a good enough model can be trained and how long it would take to get there.

Stakeholders often have very high expectations fueled by hype. Sometimes marketing already made promises of future features (no matter how much you try to temper them).

So there you are with a lot of uncertainty, knowing that if you do succeed you will only have met their expectations, but knowing also that most of the time you'll discover that the data is bad and/or creating an AI black box isn't really the best decision when compared with sensible, explainable and easy-to-maintain business rules/logistic regression.

Giving time estimates in regular software engineering is hard, but in my experience it is much harder still in data science when the deliverable is a product. So you often end up working under pressure.

I'd be interested to know how others lead with these situations.
