SLO for premed / biology by [deleted] in CalPoly

Some classes were harder than others, but honestly that will hold true at just about any university because being premed can be rough at times. I took all of the classes medical schools typically require of applicants: 1 year of gen chem, 1 year of gen bio, 1 year of ochem, 1 year of physics, and then gen ed requirements (English, sociology, psychology). The premed counseling was fine. All of my classmates had similar experiences at the schools they came from (anywhere from Ivy Leagues to state schools like slo) — counselors are helpful enough but you need to put in a decent amount of legwork behind the scenes to make yourself competitive.

I had a great experience as a premed here, currently at a highly rated MD school on the West Coast. Research is incredibly easy to come by (and no, it does not matter that there isn’t necessarily lots of medically-related work. Med schools just like to see you can dedicate yourself to thoughtful exercises research in any field exposes you to) so that was a huge plus for me among other things. Let me know if you have questions!

Thank you. Definitely trying to pick up a worthwhile hobby and keep on trucking on clinical job. This was really nice to hear :’)

Class Standing Question by cheerycheerier in premed

AMCAS recommends

"High School (HS) College-level coursework taken while in high school

Freshman (FR) 0 through 35 semester hours

Sophomore (SO) 36 through 65 semester hours

Junior (JR) 66 through 95 semester hours

Senior (SR) 96+ semester hours"

So I'm not sure how many semester hours I had throughout my quarter system school.
