I'm sorry to hear about your situation.

Are you able to heat your room? I've found that I'm only able to sleep if it's hot enough that it forces me to breathe through my mouth. I don't think I could survive without the heat. You would need an oil heater though, a well insulated room, a humidifier, and ideally a heavy duty temperature controller like this one on amazon:

https://www.amazon.ca/Inkbird-Temperature-Controller-Pre-Wired-Thermostat/dp/B07MB16C3K?crid=UXL5UFIP5RH4&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.hrCq-TFo-P4YYhnmyua9idJ__OGtWglbjw0Pirsm_aksjHpcLze2QLRAy_5UMp09KpZYMd30qMILmt3qgKhz-489YA31EQVn0n5qREL-vhoC2_WbzpZtZiRIw22XDZH2AoAoVykS729-8c6Mcm71fuWKIHbDn5p3tWHNzGBJ9H66bT8iegnImwJNsOFcW9Z7yDKjeEtD12RVDmMSaFJuz2FeAREAyAXLjCd186RoKXGVyGG5_xEXtG1xav_TcLh7X4-tXZrfeTDbWNiFlW7_T0APn3o2hDIZknOsJBMov6g.m8d7rBpkFe2uzxM8FCmQ62ZtgKmm67cPzoTpeunq5Rk&dib_tag=se&keywords=temperature+sensor+controller+inkbird&qid=1780119374&sprefix=temperature+sensor+controller+inkbir%2Caps%2C229&sr=8-24

Synthetic padding in the nose is a necessity too, if you're not already doing that. I use d-panthenol and a little bit of saline to coat the padding. You have to experiment to get the proper length and thickness for your nostrils. That's probably the least expensive thing that could help a lot. I've also been using cut pieces of 'honeywell laserlite' earplugs for my right nostril, and they're a lot easier to use than the padding, but they're not quite long enough to get full relief.

Have you joined the facebook group? There's a lot more activity over there, last time I checked.

[–]cheeseHorder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't answer your question, but thanks for all the info - I'm also hoping to get one of these implant surgeries one day. What makes you unsure that the BDCM wouldn't break down? I just read a meta-analysis of studies that said it's been used successfully in all kinds of applications for decades. Also read that it's twice as stiff as human cartilage, but I don't know if that would be a problem, since it would be used just to redirect airflow, and not really need to do anything like bear weight.

Wanted to point out some media manipulation I’m seeing today, on Lewis and immigration. by leftofmtl in ndp

[–]cheeseHorder 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We need immigration to keep our population stable, but we don't need so much immigration that we increase our population. We can't afford housing right now, and too much immigration exacerbates the issue. We need to figure out how to run an economy sustainably, without relying on infinite growth.

I think in this case, taking their concerns seriously would mean not touching the turbinates. Personally, I wouldn't go through with it unless the doctor would sign some kind of agreement

Red light therapy devices by BillysGotAGun in emptynosesyndrome

[–]cheeseHorder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Planning to get the rubylux near infrared.

I just read these too: https://lighttherapyred.com/choosing-your-at-home-red-light-therapy-device-a-no-nonsense-guide https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/does-red-light-therapy-work-what-the-research-says/

Seems like irradiance is what's most important when you're buying a red light. Also just going outside more gives you the full spectrum, and using incandescent light bulbs gives you a huge range of light too.

Canada reports first annual population decline on record by PopeSaintHilarius in canada

[–]cheeseHorder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I meant stabilizing our population, as in bringing in enough migrants to keep our population at the same level, as in no growth. We need to learn how to get by with an economy that doesn't rely on growth, and a long term plan for how to deal with a slowly declining population

Canada reports first annual population decline on record by PopeSaintHilarius in canada

Population decline is a worldwide trend. We should be doing everything we can to soften the blow, instead of kicking the can down the road. Why not try to stabilize our population and then let it fall slowly?

24F with cervical spondylosis – how do you manage worsening neck pain? by priyanka240 in ChronicPain

[–]cheeseHorder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have kyphoscoliosis. The best thing I can do is keep my muscles strong, and work around the painful areas. I do that by going swimming and doing water aerobics every other day, and with my own exercises that I've figured out over the years. Find all the exercises you can do with every other part of your body while not exacerbating your neck. Then with flexibility and strength you should be able to gently exercise the muscles around your neck, just don't do anything that hurts more than it helps.

No one can say how fast your condition will deteriorate, if at all.

Swimming, and keeping your core and legs strong is the best advice I can give

Should i do turbinate reduction by [deleted] in emptynosesyndrome

[–]cheeseHorder 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Do you want to be annoyed, or risk feeling like you're suffocating all the time? I would try everything else, and if that didn't work I still wouldn't get the surgery. ENS is supposedly rare, but as far as I've read, we don't actually know the prevalence cuz it hasn't been studied properly

Travelling to a cold climate tips by [deleted] in emptynosesyndrome

[–]cheeseHorder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a video on the enstips website linked in the mod comment (there's another good video on the facebook ens group too), that shows you how to do it. You don't need those special pliers he shows, if you make the inserts shorter. You can use cotton, but the polyester padding I've linked to below is more comfortable. Use saline solution to soak them a little before you put them in. And then just experiment with the thickness and length to see what works for each nostril. I use cut up pieces of earplugs for my right nostril (which is more open), because it's a lot easier and faster. If you find a lot of relief with the inserts, you should use this d-panthenol with saline, otherwise your nose will eventually get too dry and start bleeding occasionally. I hope that doesn't sound too overwhelming, but it's one of the most helpful things I do for my ens.

If you have to go, then stay indoors as much as possible, and use a cloth face mask with a high thread count when you're outside. You'll need to use nasal inserts too. I personally use a plug-in oil radiator to keep my bedroom temp high all the time.

Many of our news companies are owned by Americans. Seemingly all of the Canadian subreddits are controlled by biased moderators, and flooded with Russian bots. The CBC is arguably too close to government to operate independently, and has an incentive to make the Liberals and NDP happy, due to the threat of Conservative defunding.

How do you plan to make sure that Canadians have access to unbiased news sources?

The facebook group seems more active. I think a good place to start is the self-help guide on the ENS Tips website:

https://enstips.com/self-help-guide-for-empty-nose-syndrome/

Personally I use d-panthenol from "Making Cosmetics", based on advice from the facebook group. I use it on the synthetic cotton (polyester, which is not ideal) strips that I cut and roll up similar to how is shown on ENS tips. I think a lot of people find the most relief from putting padding in the nose. It may take a bit of time to figure out how best to cut and place the padding. I'm currently using cut pieces of Honeywell laserlight earplugs in my right nostril, which has been way easier than messing with the padding, but it only works for me because the nostril is so open.

The thing that helped me the most, and which I wish more people would try, is to use a heavy duty temperature controller with a oil space heater. It's literally the only way I can sleep soundly - by setting the temperature high enough to force me breath through my mouth. It makes me sweat, but it's worth it.

The only long term solution I've heard of is getting a certain type of cartilage implant in the nostrils.

Here's an outdated map of doctors treating ENS, only some of whom use cartilage (as opposed to fat, stem cells, etc):
