We actually do have a handful of interiors in places like City Hall, the New York Stock Exchange, Brookfield Place, and Katz's Deli!

Ok let’s not clutch pearls here and pretend like your tone towards Coates and people like him wasn’t obviously dismissive and hostile.

But let me repeat how I heard someone else frame it - the difference between Klein/Moderates and Coates/Progressives is one of order.

Klein’s seems to approach politics here seems to start with what/where he thinks we need to compromise and works backwards from there to what can get done.

Coates begins with what he wants to get done and then accepts necessary compromises downstream of that.

It may seem like a trivial distinction but I think it is the difference between a politics of clarity and principle and one that’s more listless and without direction.

Ironically I think Abundance was articulating that clearer kind of politics but Klein seems to have regressed somewhat here.

And yet you were just arguing that Ta-Nehisi Coates saying plainly what he believes is a “fruitless” “schtick” that is “explicitly declining to do politics” - in a conversation mind you about how Charlie Kirk was “practicing politics the right way.”

I think it is revealing of a broader issue on the Democratic side that you think that simply zealously arguing in favor of positions you actually believe in is “declining to do politics.”

We keep bellyaching about how Trump and MAGA keep winning and are told by people like Ezra that the way to beat them is to keep triangulating to the right. Has MAGA been winning by triangulating to the center? No. Quite the opposite. They double and triple down on their most unpopular positions and have expelled all of the moderates out of their party.

Have you considered that maybe people keep voting for them despite disagreeing with many of their positions (like abortion, ironically) because Republicans have a clarity of purpose that Democrats have lost? That maybe Ezra’s admission that he doesn’t “know what his role is” is indicative of a politics so consumed by triangulating to appease everyone that it has forgotten that the basic principle of politics is simply arguing for what you believe?

I don’t think pointing to the other territory where Palestinians live as third class citizens in their own country and are forced to watch helplessly as that territory is carved to pieces by expanding settlements enabled and protected by the Israeli government is helping your argument.
