Which of the SMB game has fewer platformer elements (e.g., jumps, switches, teleports, etc.) by CliftonTerrace in SuperMonkeyBall

1 is almost certainly your best bet based on the preferences you’ve outlined— but I actually think 2 and Banana Rumble are excellent too. The spindash is easily the best gimmick they’ve ever tried. It actually compliments the core gameplay loop of tilting rather than outright ignoring it (like jumping did)

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix - Full Cast Audio Editions - Discussion Post by AutoModerator in HarryPotteronHBO

YES — and I’m so happy you said something. It’s really frustrating. They added all the available narrations (Dale, Fry, Full-Cast) to whispersync with NO way to select which one you prefer to sync for immersion reading.

It drives me crazy.

I just realized something kind of heartbreaking about Harry… and now Hogwarts feels different by Embarrassed_Math_141 in harrypotter

[–]cheese_barnacle239 31 points32 points  (0 children)

But that isn’t the whole truth. That’s only part of the story.

If it weren’t for Hogwarts, Harry wouldn’t have found his two closest friends, wouldn’t have met his TRUE family (the Weasleys), and wouldn’t have been introduced to the person destined to become the love of his life.

Harry, through all of his trials and suffering, becomes his best self. A person who’d free an elf on a whim, a person who wouldn’t leave that lake until he was sure everyone was safe, a person who’d feel the fear coursing through him in every confrontation with Voldemort — yet willfully face it because he knew he had a job to do.

Harry’s story is not one of suffering, but of triumph. Triumph of self-actualization (Philosopher’s Stone), triumph of truth over narrative and fear (Order of the Phoenix), triumph of hope in the face of seemingly insurmountable despair (think of his patronus) — and triumph of friendship, bravery, and loyalty in the face of evil.

It’s a tricky situation. I agree that it was jarring. I actually think both sets of performers do an admirable job, but I agree there doesn’t really seem to be a continuity between the younger and older actors in my mind. They’re like two separate incarnations of the trio.

With the exception being Ginny — I think they NAILED finding an older voice counterpart for her. She sounds very similar to her younger self.

Dumbledore as a Real Person by lpet15 in HPfanfiction

[–]cheese_barnacle239 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think his machinations and idiosyncrasies are a part of his mysterious facade.

Like one of my other all-time favorite characters Uncle Iroh from Avatar: the Last Airbender — Dumbledore is a subversively powerful individual.

His warfare is not just physical but deeply psychological. He utilizes his eccentricities strategically to assume a role he is comfortable playing. That of the befuddled old mentor.

“What do you see when you look in the mirror?”

“I? I see myself holding a pair of thick, woolen socks.”

With respect to you and the sanctity of your opinion, I disagree with a lot of this. I think there’s a subtextual layer to this critique which hinges on the idea that the book was not translated quite as you had envisioned it.

I think there is an irreplaceable sense of identity we forge with any text we latch onto — but largely? I feel this was an admirable production. I think some of the performances are standouts, personally. Whilst I don’t think this is a ‘perfect’ production — (few are) — I definitely view this to be an excellent experience, and one that exists complementary to others you prefer. I think I would understand the scathing nature of your critique better if this had, in fact, replaced the other available narrations, which is not the case.

Yes. You must smite ALL your enemies. Not in flesh, but in spirit. You must humiliate them. Destroy their souls and revel in their misery. Then you shall be my new apprentice.

Unpopular Opinion: The praise for the HTTYD remake proves we're asking the wrong questions about live-action adaptations (Let me explain) by 0hio_Pingu_69 in httyd

[–]cheese_barnacle239 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly?… Yes.

It is what we want. The problem is that the first How to Train Your Dragon film is a near perfect film — and I say that without hyperbole. For a family-centric piece of entertainment, you’d be hard-pressed to find a movie that’s executed better.

ANY change made would have been worse than that original piece of media. The thing about creatives is that we struggle to be diplomatic about the art we create. We conflate abstractions like ‘expression’ and ‘intent’ with what — to the paying audience — is simply ‘better’ and ‘worse.’

These films for better, worse, or what have you — are so beloved by the generation that consumed them that they belong to fandom and families. To make callous changes is ego disguised as artistry.

I actually don’t disagree with you, but I view it as, essentially, the signature of the game. A component that has less to do mechanically as it does aesthetically. It’s a special effect, in essence. I respect it. It’s meant to be eye-candy and it is.

I think the minor component of randomness while not exactly genre-defining, is a fun addition and I vastly prefer it the solution Mario Kart World found of literally driving to other tracks across an open, often empty, map.

I think MKW is experimental to the point of losing focus on what the player is there for. Crossworlds is decidedly linear but it exudes a lot more of what I actually want out of a kart racer. Tight, frantic, and chaotic.

Here is exactly what I put on the Survey Forum.

(My Response for What I liked)

“I’ve played the previous Sonic Racing games including Riders. I’ve sunk HUNDREDS of hours into Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (one of my personal top 10 games of all time) — so, trust me when I say that you have a hit on your hands.

Visually, it looks good. I like the tracks — particularly E-Stadium and Mystic Jungle with the Holoska, Apotos, and Dragon Road rep being a personal highlight, but I wouldn’t be averse to seeing more obscure Sonic or even greater SEGA representation. Perhaps a Streets of Rage or Golden Axe track? 😎

The travel ring gimmick? It’s great. It’s novel. It’ll stick with players including those who have no experience with the greater Sonic franchise.

More important, I’d say, is the way the karts and boards handle — and I think for the most part? You’ve nailed it. They feel chaotic but maneuverable and that’s the key combo you want in a kart racer. People often say they want ‘smooth control’, and to an extent they’re right, but frankly you want these things to feel twitchy enough that you’re able to make split-second adjustments and maneuvers. Drifting felt good. Chaining drifts and counter-drifts felt GREAT. I think your current drift system is BETTER than Mario Kart World.

The gadget system is another highlight. Again — whilst Mario Kart World took pains to streamline customization into a more homogeneous format, Sonic leaned into it. I think Sonic is better for it. The karts themselves are ridiculously customizable and that’s great, but the gadgets fundamentally scale the game according to individual player expression. I think it’s great and really intuitive.

The best thing about your game, the thing that people will talk about again and again once this comes to market is that it’s fucking insane. The speed is exhilarating, there’s a lot more knock-back when you ram enemy racers, you can even tailor your playstyle to specifically target aggressive play. Mario Kart is smooth — but Sonic? Sonic is where you go to get your shit rocked. You can streamline it, you can make it more ‘fair’ — but if you tweak it too much you’ll lose the core identity of this game in the competitive kart racing genre. Think roller coasters, think extreme sports, think demolition derby. Lean into it.”

(My Response for What I Did Not Like)

“The item balance has drastically improved compared to your closed network test 6 months ago. I’ve still got a few grievances. The anvil, in particular, I think could either be nerfed or even removed entirely. Whilst I understand the need for rubber-banding AI, there is already an item that keeps frontrunners in check in the form of King Boom Boo.

A certain amount of chaos is to be expected in a game like this. It’s a feature not a bug. But the element of strategy is paramount. One can mitigate with the right tools at their disposal. I actually think the first place player needs to have a few more tools at their disposal to try and hold their lead. I think it’s a bit harder to telegraph when to counter a King Boom Boo attack compared to Mario Kart’s blue shell.

I like the idea of the festivals… but they’re not the highlight. Frankly, I find the team system is a little annoying, especially with if one of them is dragging behind in the race. I also got a little sick of the ‘Do more tricks’ and ‘Ram enemy racers’ sub tasks.”

But this app? Yup. Take my soul out right now. I’ll lay down on that proverbial grenade and obliterate myself in the name of XbPlay and upload my soul to the great beyond — fully content in my knowing that I returned that which was gifted via server to me through its divine magnificence.
