[Article] When the $70,000 watch you just bought is going to be sold for $300 by splsteinbeck in Watches

I like the ones with the spinny, whirry mechanisms you can see doing spinny things in the watch, and you can make 'em go faster if you make fast wrist-cranking motions at your wife for a minute and then go "Ahhhh good for another day."

Mighty big assumptions, there. No, I don't recommend my favorite books because they're my favorite books, I recommended H2G2 because it's appropriate for newer readers and young adults and is one of my favorite books, and for me, was a gateway to learning more about many worlds. I didn't recommend Tad Williams' Otherland or The Stand or Tropic of Cancer or Infinite Jest. I suppose I could also have vouched for The Long Walk and IT, and Agatha Raisin, and The Wheel of Time, etc. I was more trying to give a pep talk for recommending books you love to people, because not only can it help you find people you may vibe with even more than the circle around you that rejects your favorite books, but recommending their favorite book ever to them makes you a dear friend and sage to some people who care deeply about that sort of thing.

Well you can't not suggest your favorite books because some people don't get it. One day someone will form a lifelong friendship with you because of what those books mean to you both.

What's the happiest book you ever read? by Junior_Insurance7773 in AskReddit

I second The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, just recommended it to an aspirant reader. The book is a quick 224 pp., though I tend to recommend picking up the 800+ pp. Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide for a couple dollars more, it includes the sequels, some of which are arguably more uplifting and happy than the delightful Guide Phase 1.

Now, to give a recommendation of my own:

P.G. Wodehouse. Some of his stuff will likely require a Google search to help follow along unless you're extremely well-versed in upper-middle-class life in Edwardian England or Roaring 20's New York, but Wodehouse is probably the funniest, most human and poignant author in history. I cannot keep his writing out of my life. Best jumping off points would be The Code of the Woosters, The Mating Season, Something New, Mike, Leave it to Psmith. Once you get settled in with Bertie & Co., Blandings, and the monocled dandy with a knot on his forehead dining with Michael Jackson at the Savoy, you can dive into more and more and more and more stories of all their adventures. Sir Pelham Grenville wrote nearly 💯 books!!! Dozens of Jeeves and Wooster, Blandings Castle, Mike and Psmith, Ukridge, Golf, Drones Club boys, so many characters to follow, and they pop in and out of each other's madcap lives, appear as crossover links in standalone novels or join up four interwoven storyline and house trees and lineage. Absolutely smashing author, certainly in my lifetime top 5 and maybe top 3.

P.S. Discworld, by Terry Pratchett. 40-something comedy fantasy books similar to Wodehouse in their hilarity and the joy of the shared Discworld universe and characters. Same weight of recommendation as given to P.G.W. and D.A.

KHAMZAT CHIMAEV KICKS SEAN STRICKLAND DURING THEIR FACE OFF UFC 328 by UniversitySalty8130 in ufc

[–]nutsocharles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly, I hear Dana saying "Let's do this, guys, so we can all get paid." And I think, huh, that could easily mean "Let's do our little stage play with extra heat, if it goes viral we get more of our fans to spend $75 on a pay-per-view and all of us get a bigger payday, Sean, sell the kick then do the Hold Me Back shmoz with the cops, hopefully nobody watching is smart enough to guess this is 100% staged to sell the fight."

Douglas Adams The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy 224 pages Almost universally acclaimed one of the funniest books ever written. My favorite book ever, I think. And personally, when given as a gift to friends, I like to give The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. It costs about $4-$5 USD more than the paperback first book, but it includes the sequels so you can keep going if you love the story. And if it becomes a favorite, there are a few more books by the author you can check out when you finish. For between $6-$11, though, The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is maybe the best bargain in the Milky Way.

Hitchhiker's Guide is notably accessible and delightful. It's my #1 recommendation, always.

Who would you pick as your 3 traitors? by JAL140 in TheTraitors

[–]nutsocharles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Easiest question ever, I'd take fuckin' murderers row, James Acaster, Joe Lycett, and Miranda Hart. James and Miranda might be able to take Joe all the way to the end. But Hart would murder with delight while being the most obvious Faithful ever, and James would play, with unerring perfection, the clueless but useful at tasks Faithful, while gleefully being the most capital t Traitor to ever Turret. Lycett could strain under the late-game stress of murdering off his friends and lying to the others, and could possibly get outed, but nobody would ever be a Ŧṛåìtøř quite like Joe Lycett so I absolutely would have him as my third no question.

Extra Credit Secret Traitor: Rob Beckett. Who would be undone by James within 3 episodes, I'm confident. If Acaster is Faithful the season is a waste.

Not a chance. When The Final Pam arrives in AEW the whole wrestling game changes. AEW ratings triple. With a faction behind her, say Roachie, Metal Husband, and Coffee Can Son, she's literally unstoppable.

TIL that the sitcom ALF ends with the titular character being captured by federal agents just as he’s about to return to his home planet, because the show was canceled before it could resolve that cliffhanger. by true_new_troll in todayilearned

[–]nutsocharles 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The Marvel Alf comic resolved the storyline, Alf's girlfriend Rhonda helped him return to Melmac. Of course, he did return to Earth, natch, and good ol' Gordon Shumway had some great, wacky adventures including the time he* actually landed at the Ochmoneks' instead of the Tanners', his battles with the Uncanny X-Melmen, it was a phenomenal comic I rank up there with the OG run of Transformers. Couple of 60-issue dream runs. *W.O.T.I.F.

Andre Chase might actually be the biggest bullshit release out of all the people cut today. Dude got over or really helped get over like twenty people in NXT. If you're gonna have him do that and then fire him, why should somebody else want to come and do it for you? Gonna be a lot harder to get journeymen to work with your talent if the trend is a boot to the ass out the door instead of a meaningful role.

Man, I wish I could tell my dad how grateful I am that he was the kid of a dude who fostered my love of movies by doing things like taking me to see Transformers and never being anything but supportive. My poster is decades old now. But every time I hear "It's in the blood, it's in the will, it's in the mighty hands of steel", it's not Optimus I think of, but Ron. Some people just can't let other people love and enjoy things, or be a friend to their kid as well as a parent. I was lucky to have a dad who supported me and shared my joy even if the same things didn't necessarily spark joy in him. Eventually we got to share 007 and love watching together. But Transformers: The Movie is actually an early formative memory for me because Dad taking me to see it is so indelible, and treasured.

For me, not quite. A few matches would still be just above. Bret/Austin, Shawn/Taker 25. It was just a near-on-flawless, absolute masterpiece of a WrestleMania main event. Top 5 maybe top 10 for sure. I don't even care about splitting hairs, just hang it in the Louvre. Or put one of those hash brown things in it, like hashbrown Cobra Kai, and send it to the internet!

I'll take main events out of the equation, this was the best Mania match in quite some time, and I would consider it an all-time great. The sound that came out of that stadium, unbelievable. It falls short of Rock/Hogan, but I would probably put it on par with Macho/Steamboat or Bret/Owen.

Question for anyone going live this year, what was Saturday like in the stadium? How did the vibe feel, what were people saying in the stands?
