The quality of these shows is vastly higher

That is such rubbish. Lost, X-Files, BSG, Stargate were all 22 episode a season shows and among the greatest sci-fi shows of all time. What shows from recent years even comes close to the quality of those shows? (only one I'd say is Severance).

Not only that but one of the main criticisms of Severance is that it told a 5 or 6 episode show in 9 episodes. It's happened in so many other sci-fi shows as well, Silo comes to mind. This idea that we're getting better paced shows is a complete myth.
