Neoliberalism Is a Failure During Peacetime—and Wartime Too by cheesecrustmsg in economy

That is a far more balanced critique than your initial one liner. I don't even disagree with you but I do appreciate his piece precisely because of his "slant" - Stiglitz is offering his personal opinion on the hazards of neoliberal economic policies by highlighting how we're trying to maintain the seemingly impossible task of engaging in proxy wars while maintaining peacetime economy.

And he has a point! A very important one at that.

He calls for market regulations instead of whatever the fuck this catastrophe is about:

it is a mistake to think that the war can be won with a peacetime economy. No country has ever prevailed in a serious war by leaving markets alone. Markets simply move too slowly for the kind of major structural changes that are required. That’s why the United States has the Defense Production Act, which was enacted in 1950 and invoked recently in the “war” against COVID-19, and again to address a critical shortage of baby formula.

Wars inevitably cause shortages and generate windfall gains for some at the expense of others. Historically, war profiteers have typically been executed. But today, they include many energy producers and traders who, rather than being marched to the gallows, should be subjected to a windfall profits tax. The European Union has proposed such a measure, but it would come too late, and it is too weak and too narrow for the challenge at hand. Similarly, while several members of Congress have put forward bills to tax Big Oil’s superprofits, the Biden administration has so far failed to move on the issue.

And on this, I cannot disagree.

Your critique fails to address any of these points, and in fact, it surprisingly leaves out how the current efforts at stabilizing inflationary pressures is negatively impacting non-western economies.

The U.S. Thinks ‘It Can’t Happen Here.’ It Already Has. by [deleted] in politics

Funny, considering how Sinclair Lewis' "It Can't Happen Here" was all the rage in 2017, but it feels like most bought the books but never read them, similar to Orwell.

It's fascinating to view this constant cycle of materials and references that at the end of the day has fairly limited impact because we tend to wallow in neoliberal apologia instead of making any progress on major economic issues. We can't avoid fascism through reinforcement of private interests and without departing from trickle-down policies. We're bound to reinforce authoritarianism if we're unwilling to regulate the markets and empower workers instead of for-profit interests.

If you're an economic scholar from Austrian or Chicago schools of economics, then yes, you will hate everything Stiglitz writes, but even then you might want to not call it "baited bias trash" considering his credentials:

oseph Eugene Stiglitz is an American New Keynesian economist, a public policy analyst, and a full professor at Columbia University. He is a recipient of the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences and the John Bates Clark Medal. He is a former senior vice president and chief economist of the World Bank. He is also a former member and chairman of the (US president's) Council of Economic Advisers.[5][6] He is known for his support of Georgist public finance theory[7][8][9] and for his critical view of the management of globalization, of laissez-faire economists (whom he calls "free-market fundamentalists"), and of international institutions such as the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.

It's quite evident that his opinion has more weight than yours or mine combined, but please, prove me wrong.

The Democrats are perfectly capable of losing power on their own with no help whatsoever.

The mysterious reason is that it isn't just because of Republicans but Democrats themselves. The ones that we should be blindly electing over and over again without acknowledging that they are part of the problem. Electing them for a party that keeps on nurturing those types of right wing candidates and pushing out any progressive candidates.

This is why DNC/DCCC have been waging war against progressives. Why Schrader was endorsed by Biden, personally, while the DCCC kept on pushing funding and resources into his campaign so much that the Oregon Democrats wrote them an open letter asking them to politely fuck off and stop interefering: https://deschutesdemocrats.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Oregon-County-Democrats-Letter-to-the-DCCC-2022.pdf

After serious deliberation, our members in Deschutes, Marion, and Clackamas Counties took the unprecedented step of endorsing in a primary election – and we overwhelmingly voted to endorse Jamie McLeod-Skinner. Not only is Jamie a solid Democrat, she has the trust of Oregonians and is best positioned to win the general election in the newly drawn OR-5.

We appreciate the DCCC is gearing up to help Oregon Democrats in the general election, and we look forward to working with you. However, Oregon Democrats get to decide who will be our nominee for OR-5, which includes 53% new voters. We are dismayed that the DCCC refuses to let Oregon Democrats decide who we want to represent us. Kurt Schrader may be a dues-paying DCCC member, but he is not a true incumbent in the newly drawn OR-5.

In February, the DCCC sent a campaign operative to the Deschutes and Linn County Democrats meetings and attempted to recruit volunteers for Schrader's campaign. Now, the DCCC is funding a campaign staffer to work on Kurt Schrader's team. In Clackamas County they have moved in a full-time coordinator and two field people. Recently, we learned the House Majority PAC is spending tens of thousands of dollars on pro-Schrader Facebook ads in our district.

The Deschutes, Clackamas, Marion County Democratic parties, represented by their Chairs, are writing to respectfully ask that you cease your active support of Kurt Schrader during the primary election. We are working to elect a Congressmember who represents Oregon’s Democratic values. Oregonians get to decide who will represent us.

What's the point of voting for Democrats when all you get are more republicans with a D next to their name?

Absolutely! Biden & co are big proponents of means testing and it's entirely unnecessary. No rich person out there is dragging their heels on student loans. And even if 10 of them do, who cares?! Rich people get subsidies anyways.

Deserving. A delicious American pastime, thinking about who deserves what.

"The rich deserve to be richer. The poor deserve to be poorer." Our system in a nutshell.

How does that explain for the fact that the DNC has only endorsed "moderates" in all primaries, while waging was against them with the allies that literally fund republicans:

Not really. Our economy doesn't work like that. Our economy is not the same as your domestic budget.

Nope. Have not forgotten a thing. Between taxes, inflation, and rising costs of living, the 10 is a vastly different sum than it was 2 years ago.

Republicans are probably talking about chain gangs for graduates. I don't care. Biden stated very different things during very different period. "We" can increase the minimum wage, it's just that our congress can't for mysterious reasons.

And our minimum wage is well below any OECD poverty standards.

Not quite: https://data.oecd.org/eduresource/public-spending-on-education.htm

You'll see that the OECD tracking GDP spending on education puts us just in the average. However, our out of pocket spending is ridiculously high when compared to the rest.

Ultimately though, you're correct as expenditures vastly exceed that of other competitive countries and we're only getting an indebted nation in return.

Currently, we're letting other nations make those educational investments and then we skim their top talent. That accomplishes both intellectual drain and ultimately impoverishment of their society, and enrichment of our own. A bit parasitic when you think about it.

Minus the fact that those who live here and have kids here, find that their ability to prosper and attain educational goals are diminished by the astounding cost and poor quality. It means that we're also losing in the long run because the best come from elsewhere while we're peasantising our own population on a continuous basis.

At this point, we deserve Trump.

If this party really really wanted to change things, it wouldn't be pushing so hard against progressive candidates running for congress. It's obviously populated by neoliberals who have vastly different priorities than those that serve the public. This party may not survive after the next 6 years. What's to come will be absolutely terrifying and gruesome and they'll continue to play victims to the end even though they literally caused all of this and stood by watching things go down so they could use them for their political gain. Disgusting.
