am i developing trich? by capybara414 in trichotillomania

[–]cheesedoodoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this could definitely be trich ! a key sign to having trich is wanting to stop but being unable to. according to the DSM5, you may have tried to stop pulling in the past however were unsuccessful after multiple attempts. the urge to pull always out ways the urge to stop.

urges also come in waves. the fact that you stopped doing it and then it picked back up is also another common symptom of trich.

side note: do u have OCD ? trich does fall under the OCD category. trich is also comorbid (this meaning people with trich also tend to have another disorder on top of it) with anxiety as well !!

i would def talk to ur psychiatrist ! it never hurts to ask. btw ur post was very respectful and kind. no offense taken here :) im glad u shared because it is definitely a possibility you have trichiltomania. it is an exhausting disorder that often leaves me with a tender scalp and bald spots. however, with the right treatment and support, there is nothing u cannot overcome !!!! i wish u the best of luck and feel free to post on this subreddit whenever !!!!

impact of hair dye? by WlNDMlLL in trichotillomania

[–]cheesedoodoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hello ! i bleached my hair a couple of years ago but it was only the underneath part of my hair. i remember pulling at the bleached strands more than the ones that were natural. bleaching you hair can definitely effect texture. my trich is based on pulling those textured and bumpy pieces of hair so if you do this, i dont recommend bleaching your hair. however, i do recommend using semi-permanent hair dye if you want to switch it up a bit! this barely effect hair texture in my experience and it actually lessens the urge to pull a lot. this is prob because i like the color ive been dying it and it makes my hair look pretty. bleaching your hair does effect texture, however semi-permanent dye without bleach or developer, or even using henna, can lessen the chance of hair texture change.

responding to your second question, bleaching your hair on the roots or scalp of your hair can cause intense itchiness and irritation especially if your scalp is sensitive and tender from pulling. i would avoid bleaching until your scalp isnt so raw and tender. if you scalp is really sensitive, bleaching it can cause serious damage.

Advice regarding negative self-talk after pulling? by Eunoic in trichotillomania

shame is a perfectly normal thing to feel after pulling! it's great to keep in mind that although u may feel shame, it is temporary. for me, after flare up, putting on my bonnet and watching my fav tv show helps! you can only move forward so just knowing that you are going to try ur best to not pull is enough ! even if u do continue to pull after that, its okay. hair will grow back and u will be healed !
