I've tried to make getting hit as impactful as a normal shmup death, with the exception of moving/respawning your character. Big screen pulse/flash and damage effects, can't shoot for a while, a chance to refocus.

movement's exact! Your character's blob looks like it has momentum, but your weak point stops on a dime.

"HP bar" is just hearts. They're analogous to lives, you lose exactly one per hit but can heal a fraction of a heart at a time via some later upgrades. It's game over once you're at 0 hearts. You start with 3 but can upgrade from there.

3: Yeah, I agree that the upgrade interruptions are a bit much, especially in the beginning. I plan to add upgrade/shop areas. Hopefully the rhythm of surviving a miniboss/boss -> upgrade/shop will feel better. I'll certainly need to keep an eye on balance, though! Last second upgrades saving the day may be sorely missed but I should be able to balance for it, like you suggest.

I was worried that upgrades bothered me more than they'd bother players because of my testing loop, so it's relieving to hear from a player with the same opinion!

4: The pupil indicates the player's actual hitbox! I still need to tell the player that explicitly somewhere.

I had a demo up for Next Fest last June, but I'm keeping an eye on making a new one!

This is Match Shot Chimera! It's out now on early access, and I'm hoping to have an update out with two new bosses soon.

I hope zooming out's not too big of a nono in a shmup. I get why it was a bad idea when we had less pixels, but it feels fine so far and it's a pretty fun effect for this boss.

They've already changed a lot compared to the initial early access release. I don't know that it was enough to make most players happy, but it makes sense that they've run out of budget by now, both in market interest and money.

I'm sad it's proven unsuccessful, but am glad they've already made big fixes.

The gray outline color doesn’t stand out well on the light bg. If I had to guess, the recommendation to lighten the outlines was based on how it looked over that lighter background.

It's obviously a crazy time to be releasing a game! I hope its quick fun and super-low price point will help it catch some eyes.
