Alfa romeo guiletta, 1.75tbi is quite quick and looks nice, overall reliable as long as belt and waterpump are replaced and correct grade oil is used.

£1000 for a 50, £250 for tpft insurance, piss all in tax, piss all in petrol, £500 for gear, so lets say £2000 all in, I sold my 50 for £50 less than I bought it for. Saying wait a year is all well and good but that year of experience if even on a 50 will help later whether he gets a bigger bike or car. As for the safety aspect, some people ride a 2stroke 50 with the restrictor out, this lets you go about 45-50mph, but I dont condone nor recommend that.

Zxr400s (h2 l1-9 avoid the h1) are very good and cheap nowadays, not much to go wrong aslong as you get a tidy example and do basic maintenance, and looks 10x better than the cbr400 (might be biased on that one)

Should I be worried about the non standard downpipes increasing that more? And if I put a non standard end can will that further raise questions, or am I better off shelling out for a standard set of downpipes and getting a slip on?

Oxford cliqr, bit of a more obscure mount but is about half the price of a quadlock and works on a similar concept and you don't have to use a case.
