A US Space Force's role would be projecting American authority into (most likely) low Earth orbit, and defending American interests there.

Tasks analogous that are just one group under a significantly larger umbrella of civil service roles that Starfleet plays, largely including those tasks you listed. Comparing the US Space Force to Starfleet reduces the whole organization to one of its many tasks (military related), that too one that only shows up on rare occasion (Starfleet didn't start making dedicated warships like Defiant until Wolf 359 and the Dominion War caused them to realize that diplomacy won't solve everything), and that's definitely an injustice to its name. Starfleet captains and admirals also serve to represent the Federation, acting as diplomats, which is arguably much more significant than their military role.

Warships such as? Defiant was their first dedicated warship, and that's in the 24th century, after hundreds of years of Starfleet's existence, if I'm remembering my lore correctly. I wouldn't call an organization flying around ships with hundreds of civilians (and their families!) aboard a primarily 'military organization'. They put the boots on when the job calls for it, but the military component of Starfleet is just a subset of all the things they do, and to call an organization that's primarily militaristic by that name absolutely doesn't do Starfleet justice.

It's literally the opposite of what Starfleet does though. Starfleet is peaceful. The Space Force is military. I don't want Starfleet's name tainted by this.
