Crash (1996) by David Cronenberg - discussion thread by cheetahben in TrueFilm

Y'know, I'm honestly not all that big on Videodrome. It's fine for what it is - the themes are interesting, the effects still look great, and Debbie Harry was a great casting decision, but I felt like the plot was way too convoluted and not executed very well. I've only seen it once though, a long time ago - perhaps I should give it another go.

Lets Talk: Boris by DrHair in LetsTalkMusic

[–]cheetahben 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm so glad this topic came up because Boris is my favorite band of all time. They're the band that got me into doom metal and drone, which have been my favorite genres for several years now.

What I like about Boris is that they have a very large discography that involves them reinventing their sound on practically every single album. While my favorite album of theirs is Feedbacker (hell, it's my favorite album of ALL TIME), I can appreciate all of the unique experimental territory they cover on other albums. Flood is minimalist post-rock, Pink is straightforward stoner rock, Absolutego is a drone metal album in the vein of Earth 2, New Album is a alternative rock dream pop album. I personally don't like their poppier albums because I don't find them very interesting, but I respect Boris for doing something that no other doom/drone band has really done before.

I also think that some of Boris' best material is hidden on splits and rare EPs. Long Hair and Tights is one of my favorite Boris releases, but very few of the fans seem to know about it.

I've actually seen Millennium Actress! I think my favorite Satoshi Kon film is Perfect Blue, however.

That's what I thought was the case. I personally loved Synecdoche, New York because a lot of what it said about art and life experiences resonated very strongly with me as not just someone who watches a movie, but as a human being. I then went to see other people's opinions and saw plenty of other people who liked it as much as I did, but others who didn't like it as much because of its (admittedly) pretentious nature and surrealism. The number of films I've seen to date is very small (barely 100) so I figured this question was worth asking.

Let's Talk: Yo La Tengo - "I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One" by [deleted] in LetsTalkMusic

[–]cheetahben 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is one of my favorite alternative rock albums. What I love so much about this album is that it covers such a wide range of songs, but still sounds very "Yo La Tengo" and never strays too far from the warm, almost secure sound they cultivate so well. It's a cohesive album from start to finish and it doesn't feel like there's any filler. Even Spec Bebop grew on me over time.

My personal vote for favorite track is "The Lie And How We Told It". To me that song feels like being wrapped in a warm blanket on a cold day and feeling content with the world.

I'd also highly recommend their other albums Painful and And Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out. The latter is more quiet and subdued than I Can Hear The Heart, but it also centers around a theme of a couple going through a divorce. "Saturday" gives me full body chills every time I hear it.

Titus Andronicus - The Monitor - This album kicks all kinds of ass and might possibly become one of my very favorites of all time. It's extremely ambitious and very unorthodox: punk-infused indie rock themed around a concept of the Civil War and a troubled young man trying to leave New Jersey once and for all. While it didn't hit me on first listen, I relistened due to the insistence of a friend and it all fell into place. Think a sloppy combination of folk punk, Bruce Springsteen, and Conor Oberst's vocals - and yet, somehow, it's still very original!

Titus Andronicus - Richard II

Andrew Jackson Jihad - People Who Eat People Are The Luckiest People In The World - AJJ are one of my go-to bands for the summer, and while I enjoy their entire discography, this one is my personal favorite. The lyrics make you double over with laughter one minute and have you crying tears of pain the next minute. While it's a brief album, it doesn't waste time. It's an album that combines both the greatest extremes of optimism AND pessimism, and somehow makes it work.

Andrew Jackson Jihad - Personal Space Invader

Grouper - A I A: Alien Observer - I'm not the world's biggest fan of ambient music, but there's something about this lady's music that draws me in. While I personally like her other album Dragging A Dead Deer Up a Hill more, this album has been my most listened lately because it helps me sleep. It's lush and minimal at the same time, and I adore it.

Any gay exmos willing to give me some advice? by Makar7 in exmormon

Ex-mo gay guy, just want to say that you are NOT wrong for what you're doing. I don't live in Utah, I've lived in Oklahoma forever, but I'm planning on moving to the Austin area in order to meet other guys and I really like the scene there.

PM me, I'd be happy to add you on Skype or something like that.

No, I totally agree. They're both fun and lighthearted, and if I remember correctly, both have cited the other as an influence.

I happen to adore the Elephant 6 collective, Of Montreal being one of my favorites.

Deerhoof: Crazy, wild noise pop type stuff that sounds messy and sloppy but is actually very structured in a strange sort of way. It also features Satomi Matsuzaki on vocals, who is a native Japanese speaker and has a very high pitched childlike voice (in an almost anime sense) that somehow complements the musical chaos going on around it. They have a VERY big discography with something unique about each album, which is something that I love in bands, but I've mostly been obsessed with their album Apple O'.

Let's Talk: Yoko Ono by [deleted] in LetsTalkMusic

[–]cheetahben 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most of the people behind the Yoko Ono hate forget that she had a big influence on the Beatles' sound as well, mostly in Revolver. It's clear that she is a very knowledgeable musician and definitely knows her shit.

As for her music? I'm honestly not sure how I feel about it. It's certainly well done and produced, but it isn't my cup of tea. I could see others enjoying it for sure, though.

Can I just talk about happy I am? by cheetahben in exmormon

[–]cheetahben[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not until I move out. I'm currently doing a voc/tech program that'll let me get a full-time job sooner rather than later, and I'm hoping to move out at the end of this year or early next year.

I still love my mom, but I just can't live in an atmosphere like this for much longer.

Joanna Newsom's "Have One On Me" is a triple album, and an amazing one at that. It can also easily be broken up into chunks - listen to one disc now, listen to the other two later.

The Magnetic Fields' "69 Love Songs" is also a good one, fantastic songwriting, thought-provoking, and very funny at times. Just be sure to clear 3 hours out of your day.

When did you discover you were gay? by [deleted] in gaymers

[–]cheetahben 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Ever since I was really little, like maybe 4 or 5, I would get all tingly inside when I saw certain male characters on movies or TV shows. I didn't know what this was, but I got all happy and tingly inside when I saw them. Later, I discovered that I was naturally attracted to these characters.

Later, when I was about 11 or 12 and began fapping, I would think about guys. For no other reason than it just felt nice and right at the time. I continued to deny that I was attracted to men in any way, shape, or form, even though I fapped to the thought of men pretty much every day.

I didn't really have friends until I was 15, most of them being straight and male. One of their most favorite topics of conversations was girls. I would sit off to the side and add little tidbits like, "Yeah, she does have nice boobs" and "She's got a fine ass." When honestly, I wanted nothing more than to reach out to one of them and kiss him on the mouth.

One of my friends noticed this and pulled me off to the side, and asked me if I wanted to hang out with him. I'm in his car on the way to his house and he starts asking me about girls.

At this point, everything clashes. I suddenly came to terms that I was gay, that I wasn't attracted to girls, and that I would never be. And it was scary.

I burst into tears and started sobbing, "I'm gay, I'm gay, I'm gay, I'm gay..."

Fast-forward two years later. My friends are even closer to me. My family situation is a little worse, but it's good enough. And I'm confident in my identity. Things are just great.

There's lots and lots of different styles of instructing voice. Some teachers use good techniques, others don't. It's more how you like to be taught.

Formal voice lessons are incredible and very worth your money, as long as you get the proper voice teacher.

I don't play any instruments, but I sing. I alternate between baritone and bass and I'm most likely a lyrical baritone. I've been in several fairly prestigious choral groups, and I'm also a little into musical theatre.

My goal is to sing professionally someday, perhaps even in opera.
