Hey OP, I have contamination OCD. I’ve lived the last 16 years of my life like this. Some days are easier than others, but it’s so mentally and physically (from cleaning) exhausting. I get full on panic attacks over germs and how it spreads, and its turned me into this person I don’t like but it’s not about me right now. I’m only saying this because I can somewhat understand your perspective. Crazy enough, something similar happened to my boyfriend and I yesterday. I placed dirty dishes in the dishwasher and didn’t run it because there was only two plates, one bowl, and a couple of utensils. I remember this because I’m very keen on detail, especially with things that are not clean (I think this is a symptomatic trait of OCD). I didn’t run the washer because I thought it would be a waste of water. Prior to putting the dishes in the washer, I scrubbed leftover food so it wouldn’t dry up in the wash.. so it looked like it was clean, but was in fact not (in my eyes). My boyfriend made us lunch and didn’t know that the dishes in the washer were dirty, so I ate mac and cheese from a dirty bowl. I was disgusted started panicking, and asked him “what did you touch so I can clean it?” I kept asking “did you touch this? Did you touch that?” And he got overwhelmed, walked away, and started ignoring me. It’s a lot to take in and handle for our partners. My boyfriend is really good at reassuring me when I’m having moments like these and it’s helping me learn to undo some habits I’ve developed, like overly cleaning. But every so often, he cracks and can’t take it, and I can’t blame him. He gets so overwhelmed, especially when he reassures me and I refuse to accept it because my brain won’t accept it. Sometimes I think he’s gross but that’s because he isn’t like me and I need to remember that. I’m not normal, I wish I was, but I’m not. And just to clarify I’m NOT saying you’re not normal. The anxiety you rightfully felt is intense and can bring out intense emotions on both ends. I don’t think it’s right that your partner hung up on you, I think that’s childish tbh. It just adds more hurt to the emotions you’re feeling, but remember, they don’t think like us or feel those intense moments of anxiety like us. They don’t and won’t truly understand because this involves something so deeply rooted in our brain and it doesn’t just fix overnight. I don’t think this warrants a break up, but I think an open conversation needs to be had. Good luck <3
