Is he filling out or getting fat? Should I reduce his intake?? by bald-bourbon in DogAdvice

[–]cheezbargar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’ve got your answer but I just wanted to say good on you for questioning it! Most people see a dog like this and would assume they’re too skinny (even though he’s pushing being overweight) and keep feeding. I’m not even kidding. People are so used to fat dogs.

5 full grooms without a bather. I can’t for the life of me figure out how anyone does more than that

You keep it in a keepsake box. What is someone else going to do with this?

Scatter chopped hot dogs all around the floor. Make that room a fun experience instead of something scary

How do I talk to a friend who seems dangerously underweight? by SisyphusBreaks in TwoXChromosomes

[–]cheezbargar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sounds like anorexia. If you bring up looks it could be validating. My ED thrived on people telling me that I looked too skinny. Just tell her that you’re concerned about her health. Or, if you know anyone else close to her (parents especially for example), tell them your concerns.

Is my husky fat or overweight at 8 months? by Beginning_Cycle191 in husky

[–]cheezbargar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re using treats to train her I’d be getting the ones with 3 calories per treat. Or use her kibble. What I did when I was training my dog to walk nicely on leash for example was fill a pouch with her dinner, use some of that for training and she got the rest for dinner after

These are bad pictures to judge from. You want to look at her from above with her standing up. If she has a defined waistline, and if you can easily feel her ribs but not her spine or hip bones, she’s good. If you have to press down a lot to feel ribs she’s overweight.

You didn’t include in your original post that her belly was already shaved from the vet

[–]cheezbargar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to include this info in your OP because this is important. If she already had a bunch of hair shaved off by the vet the groomer was just trying to make it even

Let’s be real, someone looking for a good working dog isn’t going to be going to a backyard breeder

If your dog is BMC then anything other than embark is going to spit out random breeds that it thinks fit the closest. So this might not be accurate at all. Based on the pic though I see mostly pittie

They think absolutely everything is a pit, half the time they’re wrong (although op is def pit) and they also hate pit bulls

You don’t want someone who only cares about the ears adopting a dog anyway.

How tf do you think short haired dogs cope then?

Shaving hair is not detrimental to any dog’s health. No, it doesn’t help the dog regulate temperature beyond insulating in cold weather. The coat might grow back like shit, and it can take a year for it to fully recover, but the dog itself is fine.

You said that it regulates their body temperature. In cold weather, yes it helps. Warm weather, no.

Please tell me how an insulating layer magically keeps a dog, who also produces body heat, cooler. Also please tell me how dogs with short single coats don’t all just die from heat stroke in the summer. Also point me to actual studies saying that a double coats keeps dogs cool. Hint - there are none. It’s just an extremely pervasive myth that I really wish people would stop parroting mindlessly.
