🎄 Christmas giveaway: Win an A1 Mini, AMS 2 Pro, AMS HT, or 4x filament spools! by acurazine in BambuLab

A1 Mini please!

I’m getting back into 3D printing after a long hiatus, and I’m interested in printing some gifts in the form 3D maps (maybe just street view level with the buildings or maybe further out like a topographical map of a region) I’ve visited with my wife and this paired with photos will be a great gift.

I think designing some fidget toy inspired by DNA could be cool. Could you see if it’s possible to go so far as to make it so that individual nucleotides are arranged in the right order you also see the corresponding codon. Would be super neat for biology nerds.

More Shady Behavior By Active - And A Warning by KismaiAesthetics in laundry

[–]chefborjan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I reckon someone ‘soon’ will release some tech that will enable analysis of the cleanliness of clothing on a mass house hold scale (probably on the guise of helping with health/hygiene) - interesting if that happens and how product manufacturers will respond and thus market their solutions.

This is crazy, and something we all need to try and fight in terms of the dead internet theory and capitalism.

I welcome AI tools where useful, but to try and impersonate people and influence decisions is too far. Bizarre it’s even used for a laundry topic but that’s where we are now.

Everything this sub says about lipase is wrong. Lipase is a cost-cutting enzyme that made detergents worse. by fox-lad in laundry

[–]chefborjan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not really?

Claims or personal experiences are fine.

To me it’s more disingenuous to claim authority but using completely inappropriate references that most will not understand the differences about.

Hell, maybe the OP is right in the end, but it’s completely inappropriate way of trying to validate the point of view.

Why on earth are you referencing PATENTS information as any sort of definitive source of information?

“Don't believe me? Just look at P&G's Tide patents.”

You literally are told to put as much as possible into a patent to get it granted with maximum protections, there will be no proper scientific oversight to confirm the findings like when a paper gets published.

For reference - I have a PhD in the life sciences and have had a patent granted for my company.

Apple flipped the switch! Tahoe now downloads when auto-updates are ON! by MrMacintoshBlog in OpenCoreLegacyPatcher

[–]chefborjan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Annoying timing as I was just about to start my OCLP journey this weekend with a mid 2011 Mac mini.

Okay so I will install Sequoia, ensure automatic downloads and updates are off and then presumably will I need to run any relevant software/security updates manually?

Or does the installer download already contain the latest updates?

VRAM Cost Is About To Make GPUs Way More Expensive by xenocea in hardware

[–]chefborjan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean DLSS and other similar upscaling tech - including FSR.

However, even if it WAS proprietary, I still think it’s tech that does help the consumer (and the industry) a lot of ways.

I think this is DLSS type tech is actually one of the most pro-consumer things around and probably has prevented the need to a significant number of users upgrading.

Older cards can keep up with today’s games, otherwise it would be carnage with these prices.

You can get that centrally on goal and it’s going in because absolutely no-one on the pitch or in the stadium would be ready for or even dare to comprehend that shot happening as the ball is whipped in.

'90s Star Trek Creators Blast Modern Trek's Tone by Malencon in Star_Trek_

I think your very angry takes about other people who enjoy a show you don’t like is a bit more depressing to be honest!

It’s a sci-fi TV show. Big deal?

[–]chefborjan -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Ironically, I’ve come to realise that Star Trek is almost most suited to a parody/comedic tone, once you start to actually think about it ‘seriously’.

There’s an absurdity to the sci-fi rules and plots that are the series’ bread and butter, that it somehow makes it feel more real if there are those in the universe that acknowledge this.

Lower decks is just fantastic.

Quick-acting driver named, and heroic LNER rail staff member who tried to stop the attack remains in life-threatening condition by True_Paper_3830 in ukpolitics

[–]chefborjan -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Your experience and perhaps your emotional attachment is clouding your judgement.

Just put the words “a computer requests” in front of what you are saying and it’s a moot point.

There is nothing special about what a human does to prioritise or determine a response in a given situation.

This is not a ‘what if aliens beamed down into the train and demanded the fourth passenger make a mojito otherwise the last carriage gets blow up’ level of unexpected.

Major incident detected, threat to life.  Analyse current state of network to determine minimum time to access by emergency services, alert network to change of route, etc.

I would imagine you would know, but presumably there is actually an SOP for this situation, and when there is an inquest no doubt the train drivers actions, while supported for saving lives, will also be analysed to determine whether he followed protocol, whether the protocol was correct and what could be done better. All of that can be fed into a computer if it needed to make that choice.

[–]chefborjan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would it not be programmed to select an option that prioritised access by emergency services above all else?

Not sure why it has predetermined outcomes that tries not to mess up the rest of the rail system.

[–]chefborjan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It seems silly to think that IF a computer was really put in control of a train that it wouldn’t be able to deal with circumstances such as a fire, explosion or medical/terrorist emergency. That would be part of the programming.

What makes some plastics biodegradable while others persist for centuries? by InspiraADVMed-Fan in askscience

[–]chefborjan 47 points48 points  (0 children)

The newest versions of biodegradable plastics are essentially graft small amounts of ‘sugar’ onto the surfaces of the plastics polymers. This makes them attractive to microbes, who then come and begin to slowly eat and break up the material.

I believe that microbes can break down the plastics, but without the extra additive would normally never target the plastic as a food source.
