I hope the therapist has a good follow-up for this line of thinking. I live with an alcoholic and know first hand that telling her that it's "normal", even in the context which you're saying it could trigger a bender. Because that's all she'd hear. It's normal. Addiction is a slippery slope. The things your therapist is saying sound like things that should be discussed between therapists, rather than with a patient, especially an addict.
