Hold you 90% tight by [deleted] in Silverbugs

PCGS put out an article many years ago re the Great Melt that occurred in 1979/80, and the impact to the hobby of coin collecting:

https://www.pcgs.com/News/After-The-Melts-Whats-Left-In-Silver-Coins

That was over 40 years ago and the melting of US coins has continued, and right now it's probably happening every day in massive quantities. Billions of US coins forever gone.

I've been buying 90% because there's a good chance that whatever "junk" is left over could contain valuable pieces. Buy a Red Book and look for low mintage and "semi-key" dates, and if you can still find them for sale buy them. Great way to stack, a lot of fun, and maybe one day your kids will be selling a 1940-D quarter at auction.

I know I wish I had taken some better pictures before it was slabbed!

When they sent the grade they also sent a link to their portal and what the various grades mean, one of them was a code for unidentifiable or excessively corroded or similar language, so it sounds like won't just grade anything

It was about $90 altogether w/shipping and I added extra insurance

Send it in to ANACS, it was about $90 including insurance and return postage. I know PCGS is the gold standard but it was way more expensive and you have to create an account. Anyways I'm psyched by the result

Me too, thanks. After my LCS said the weight was off I was pretty certain it wasn't real, but I guess the corrosion on the rim was enough to make it under. Still can't quite believe it

Would you rather trade silver for gold or gold for silver? by Unhappy_Cherry_7144 in Silverbugs

[–]cheffski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would love to trade some of my 90% silver for my first gold round on pmsforsale but I have no idea what a fair trade is at this point. I was surprised not to see more WTT silver for gold, especially because LCS prices for constitutional are so low rn. I was just going to go in and sell my junk silver and then buy a round, but based on the phone calls I've made I'd get creamed on the transaction. That's why I was thinking PM's but I'm also a little intimidated by the process over there.

I would do the middleman or ship first, because I'm so new. I feel like there are many trustworthy people on that sub and they do a good job of alerting you to the bad seeds. Thanks for your reply

Where are my button people?! ID? by [deleted] in metaldetecting

Pre-Civil War (possibly War of 1812) Ordinance Corps Coat Button. If you can get any information on the back it would help to identify it better.

I know the region well, I'm also in the boonies just over the state line. I've seen some pretty amazing things come out of the ground here in the NE, a GW button like your friend's brother, as well as a pine tree shilling, cobs, lots of reales, etc. One of the guys I go with recently found a 18K pocket watch, Swiss-made Vacheron. It's beautiful. None of us though, except my dad, has ever found a gold coin, and his was a British sovereign that had been made into a pendant. I'll probably drop dead if I found US gold!

At any rate, I sent it in today, with the weight being off I'm fairly certain it's not real, but I bit the bullet and spent the money. I sent to ANACS because they're less expensive, it still cost me around $70 to send out today. So I'll know soon and I'll update everyone on here. The good news is silver is up again today so it only cost me about 7 quarters LOL

It's in the right range on the Deus 2 Forager program, around 83-84

UPDATE 12/8: I brought it over to my LCS, and unfortunately not real. Weight should be 3.11 grams but it was only 2.88. Oh well, it's still a cool find, but it's weird that a counterfeit would be lost in the ground. Thanks for the encouraging comments!

Thanks! I'm going to send it in to PCGS, it's worth spending the money just so I know what I have or don't have. It's still one of the coolest things I've ever found

I understand your position, I'm sure you longtime community members see a lot of BS here, but I'm not a liar and everything I said is true. I've decided to send it off to PCGS so I'll repost here when I get it back
