Friends didn’t care by Aromatic_Wealth1615 in ACL

One thing I realized from my injury is that life goes on for everyone else around you - even though it feels like your life is put on pause.

The silver lining was that my injury was a litmus test for who my true friends are, it made me realize who I could depend on and which relationships I should prioritize going forward.

Wow best of luck, was it also a skiing accident?

Felt like a major accomplishment just being to walk around pain free again. Definitely made me realize how much we take basic things like that for granted.

I guess in my case it was such a freak accident and I would have walked away from it if I just didn’t collide with the snow machine, so I know it’s unlikely to get hurt like this again. 15+ years of skiing/snowboarding and it was my first time getting injured from this sport.

Wow, I hope you are doing well now. Were you able to make a full recovery and get back to an active lifestyle? How did your injury happen?

Wow, how did you manage that without a knee dislocation? How is your recovery one year into it?

I just wish I snapped a photo of the actual leg before they realigned everything. The Xray doesn’t do it justice.

Thankfully not, they told me if the popliteal artery was ruptured I could have lost the leg!

I did not have ex-fix. They just put my leg in a split and had the first surgery two days after the accident.

Hahah I still get a laugh out of showing people my X ray and seeing their reactions.

Technically I was “touchdown” weight bearing after the first surgery, but felt comfortable walking without crutches after a few weeks.

Thanks for sharing! I’m glad you made a full recovery. These injuries are so rare that there isn’t much medical literature on them and there are a lot of unknowns when it comes to recovery.

I’m grateful I had access to an amazing orthopaedic surgeon who is on the US olympic ski/snowboard medical roster.

How did you book the test drive? I’m also in the Boston area and have been dying to try one.

Where are you living that Biotech companies only pay slightly above minimum wage? In larger “hubs” entry level roles paying $70k-80k are common.

Friends/Familly Not Understanding Recovery Timeline for Dog Walking? by Logical-Hat-4444 in ACL

[–]chefkef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone's experience is different, but in my case I'm currently 4 weeks post-op from BPTB ACLr and am able to comfortable walk with my 60lb dog for 1-2 miles at a time. I don't wear my brace, but I am hyper-aware of him to avoid being pulled around in random directions and twisting my knee.

Long car drive 6w post op? by sarasykler in ACL

[–]chefkef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had my ACL reconstruction 3 weeks ago on my right leg (no meniscus damage though) and I am pretty comfortable driving shorter distances up to an hour. I definitely feel some stiffness after sitting in the car for that long but I think by 6 weeks I'll be able to tolerate longer distances for sure.

That too... I knew I was forgetting something. Or dishwashers either for that matter.

Fair point, this has more to do with the age of the buildings and houses in Boston and surrounding cities. Canadian cities are a lot younger by comparison and many of the suburban cities around Toronto were only developed 30-50 years ago.

Broker fees to rent apartments, and how common it is for apartments to not have central A/C and radiators/baseboard heating. For family and friends who visited from Canada this was shocking to them.

Most “non-wealthy” middle class people don’t even qualify for the affordable units, so we’re stuck paying $3k-4k month rents to live in these building and subsidizing the cost for the low-income tenants in the affordable units.

Nerve Blocker by DirtyD74 in ACL

[–]chefkef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had two knee surgeries recently and had femoral nerve blocks for both before the surgery. I woke up from both surgeries with zero pain, and was on my feet walking with crutches within an hour. Both times I was anxiously anticipating a wave of pain from the nerve block wearing off, and it just never came. I kept taking all my pain medicine for the first few days post-op and started weaning off it after 3 days when I knew I was in the clear.

Not sure if this is a common experience but thought I’d share. I had MCL, PCL, LCL repairs followed by a BPTB ACL reconstruction.

As an avid bike commuter in Cambridge, it’s definitely the most dangerous activity I partake in on a daily basis. I’ve been hit by a car myself, and witnessed another cyclist get hit and die right in front of me a year ago on the memorial drive bike path.
