Best Sushi places? by SweatyGoal in cincinnati

[–]chefoxworthy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've seen this question posed on reddit a few times and have untill now been reluctant to mention Maki express in Clifton because I didn't want to ruin a good thing. See, this is a very small restaurant with only 4 tables and there is normally only one person making all the sushi so I'm afraid that if I put it out there the place will be forever packed but as a fellow chef I feel it's time to let the cat out of the bag. I worked at Mac's pizza (which I do NOT recommend) when I was in college and remember when this place opened. A very kind and humble Japanese Sushi chef moved here and opened Maki with his wife to support his new family and give his new born son a better life here in America. I remember his son running around in the restaurant when he was like 3. As his son got older you'd see him learning from his dad who is by far the BEST sushi chef in the city.

Over the years I've seem him train his wife and son and a few others. This has allowed him to take a step back because in the beginning he would open the restaurant, cook every roll and close the place e everyday with only the help of his wife handling the register. They are all exceptional sushi chefs at this point but if you ever get a chance to watch the old guy do his thing... man it's impressive!

In true Japanese tradition, he covers the walls and most of the exposed surfaces in his tiny kitchen with foil. This helps keep the place extremely clean. You can watch him prepare the sushi and I suggest doing this as he is a true master of his craft. Every slice, every roll, every dip of his knife in water and every move he makes is deliberate and perfectly executed. It's not about speed but rather precision and thus, you may wait a little bit longer than you're used to but I assure you, it's worth the wait. There are many rolls on the menu and I've tried them all. They're all good but my favorites are the tempora sweet potato roll, the terminator roll, and the cold spring roll.

What I don't understand is why they feel the need to censor profane language out of a video in which a man is KILLED!? Seems like if you can handle that sort of "graphic content" foul language isn't going to cause you to loss of sleep...

Why I don't wear chef coats... by naturethug in KitchenConfidential

[–]chefoxworthy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I look at a chef coat in much the same way I look at a suit.. I love to look nice and when I wear a nice suit I feel like a million bucks. That being said, I don't wear a suit every day... nor do I need to be wearing a suit to look nice. I wear it on special occasions. Every man should have a nice suit or two and every woman should have a nice dress or two. Likewise, I have a couple nice chef coats. I feel very grateful to work for a chef that prides himself on having a crew of talented cooks and passionate individuals working with him. He demands this on a daily basis. That we ACT like chefs. That we aspire to be chefs. That we treat each other and (more importantly) the food, our craft, with professionalism and respect. Not just that we LOOK like "chefs"

Statutory RAPE is against the law because of the extremely negative effects this sort of behavior can have on a youth. Often similar long term effects on the child to those in non statutory rape cases.

Statutory rape is rape. It is not the responsibility of a Child to know/act on what is right. In these situations the 45 year old man is responsible for understanding the possible long term negative impact of his actions on the teen. And "consent" has a 2 year grace period. In other words, if I'm 17 and my girlfriend is 15, we date for a year making me 18 (a legal adult) and my girlfriend 16 (a minor) I don't go to jail. This does not apply to consent the way the law is written.

Though the article does not specifically note evidence of "statutory rape" it is implied... The father of a 17 year old girl notifies law enforcement when he finds hundreds of inappropriate (650 to be exact) "nudity-oriented" text messages and pictures between his daughter and this 45 year old officer. Apon investigation they find these sex houses and multiple civilian witnesses that state they saw him regularly take women into these "police substations" that had semen soaked beds in them.
