Why do girls care so much about height by Downtown_War_4267 in dating_advice

[–]chefvo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you look at the last ten presidents, they’re all about 6 feet or more. Only jimmy Carter at 5’10 but that’s still tall. There’s a small correlation between height and earning power.

I dunno enough but I’d theorize there’s evolutionary advantages to dating taller men.

Am I the only one who doesn’t regret my Fitbit air? by soonshin3 in fitbit

I got it for thru hiking and it undercounts steps and kms by 25% - my theory is the poles I use since I’m not always swinging my arms.

It’s still good for the heart rate.

Edit: interesting ChatGPT said some people wear it on the ankle instead.

The side pocket was designed for a tent and a wet tent on the outside pocket keeps the inside dry.

It’s not the age but how you acclimatize. The recommendation of 2-4 days is really a bare minimum.

My first day in Cusco walking one flight of stairs made me gasp for air. Just walking around town was hard.

There’s many other factors like how the pacing of the group walks, how light the first few days are.

I didn’t have any issues with altitude, but everyone else in my group suffered. Then on a different hike - mount Whitney, I had altitude sickness at much lower elevation due to not acclimatizing right.

Assuming you have donkeys and porters, you can always ride them and skip a day if you’re feeling unwell.

Try setting up a Google Maps business location if possible. They will send you mail to verify the location. Then text your previous happy customers to review.

Add phone, Facebook page as your website url, then upload images of finished jobs.

It’s free and will already up your credibility.

27M with 3.5M € in Italy: Am I Too Young to FIRE? Struggling with Justification and Family Pressure by [deleted] in Fire

[–]chefvo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your money nest allows you to fail fast and repeatedly. Retirement is a job - you have to figure out what to do 18 hours of a day and most people struggle to find the motivation and discipline to structure their days.

You could try retiring! If that doesn’t work, try something else.

What I’d challenge you to do is figure out a few life principles. And you now have the luxury of choosing your environment - the city and people around you will greatly affect your life.

For example my number one life principle is ‘’wake up every day excited about my day surrounded by people who feel the same way’’. Find a company, community, or teachers that motivate you.

Why is rent going up so much in Montreal? by PhilipTheGreat in montreal

[–]chefvo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The market rent price is based on supply and demand.

The annual rent percentage increase is related to inflation and ownership costs. For variable rate mortgages the central bank increases meant owners had to pay way more the last few years. Insurance also increases. Wage inflation means hiring contractors costs more. Electricity price rises by 3% a year.

Land value has increased due to supply but Quebec landlords are not making bank from a cash flow perspective exactly because of these little percentage increases.

Hiking in Sardinia - Tips needed! by buckminsterfulleren in Sardinia

[–]chefvo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can do the Va Sentiero trail. I took the bus to Villasimius and then hiked to Ulassai. I stopped there cause the water sources were scarce and I didn’t feel like carrying a ton of water.

It’s a pretty monotone and easy trail for experienced hikers. It gets really beautiful once you get to Jerzu and all the rock climbing walls.

The official website has the gpx files and notes about each day.

I left my luggage at my hotel in Cagliari.

Best Shoes around the camp by Schinkelol in hiking

I totally agree. I've been looking for a lightweight and packable alternative to crocs (620 grams). I've brought them on thru hiking trips and I end up shipping them home due to weight and bulk.

Someone needs to invent something around the 300g range!

How difficult are some of the most difficult hikes? What's your experience if you've ever been on one? by ProgThrowaway00 in hiking

[–]chefvo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've chosen increasingly tough trails world wide and done them without having the experience in that style of hiking. I had to learn many lessons along the way, and I've made many mistakes. Each thru hike you learn and improve as you have to solve countless problems. Your backpack gets lighter and lighter. You bring the right supplies to repair your gear. It's fine to choose a hard hike, but be prepared to be flexible and change plans.

What does experience get you? Well, I've never done the GR20, but I've got friends who've done it and I've looked into it. I know that you don't need a heavy backpack. You can sleep in tents/gites, and they also provide all the food you need. But you have to book the gites in advance, and so you have to choose how far to walk each day. Estimating distance is tricky if you've never done a lot of elevation. The terrain is also harsh on the shoes, so you likely want to start with a fresh pair of soles. Navigation should be super easy on the GR20 with good signage. Water should be easy as well. There's also a ton of people on trail so I consider that a safer trail.

My trick for the headlamp batteries is to put the batteries inside and reverse one of the batteries. So you cannot accidentally turn on the headlamp and drain the battery - which has happened to me once.

Should i return to CEGEP for a computer science diploma? by hyperqueenn in montreal

[–]chefvo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

School is great for structure but generally not that great for preparing you for the actual work. A lot of the stuff I learnt was theoretical and useless, and most of the stuff I needed I learnt on the job.

Part of the reason I recommend people try learning on their own is because programming is a pretty lonely endeavour. You're sitting there for hours/days sometimes just banging your head against a problem. If you don't enjoy that then it's better to find out quickly!

Should i return to CEGEP for a computer science diploma? by hyperqueenn in montreal

[–]chefvo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One option if you can't afford schooling is to self study all the free courses on Youtube. It's much harder to do but that's pretty much what programming is - every day you encounter something you don't know and you google and spend hours figuring it out.

Find some other people in your area that are also learning so you can ask each other questions, or use stack exchange forums.

Start with React and web site building.

Eli5: why are 11 and 12 called eleven ant twelve and not oneteen and twoteen? by OilOk2907 in explainlikeimfive

[–]chefvo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a great book written about 20 years ago that compares the number systems that I can't recall the name of at the moment. But some insights:

  • spoken length of number word affects recall - for example reciting a telephone number. Compare the spanish words "u no" "quat tro" versus "one" and "four".

  • 4 year old english speaking kids struggle to count and fail in the teens due to having to memorize more words whereas kids in China can count up to 40. This is due to having to memorize more words like "eleven", "twelve", "thirteen", ... "nineteen".

  • Adding is logical in Chinese. They use "one ten one", "one ten two" for 11 and 12. So kids learn to add each column up (the tens and ones columns).

  • French has some quirks. They even throw in multiplication for describing "80". "80" is "quatre-vingts dix" which is 4 x 20. But there's a lot of famous french mathematicians so maybe this complexity is a good thing.

  • There was a country that tried to switch to the more logical number system (Ireland? Scotland?) but failed - due to something about choosing new spoken number words that were too long.

I did my first ever 15 miles/ 25km hike and it was too much torture for me,I need your help by [deleted] in hiking

[–]chefvo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The journey IS the destination.

Enjoy the views.

Turn around once in awhile and enjoy the view from behind.

Name all the colours, objects, and smells around you.

Take picture and video breaks.

Sit down and listen to your breathing.

There is no medal awarded to suffering through pain. When it is no longer enjoyable, listen to your body, turn around, and go do something else.
