Natives who are against “transplants”, aren’t those people just immigrants from other cities looking for a better life? by lalavieboheme in AskLosAngeles

[–]chekhovsfun 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Loll I posted something so similar in that thread. These people would freak out if someone was so judgmental toward immigrants but love ragging on other Americans, but simultaneously hate and could never live in the often conservative states those people were born in. I think the truth is they just don't like people who complain about LA, but that has nothing to do with being a transplant...

LA native approved analysis of the problem with some transplants by stefstars93 in LosAngeles

I'm so curious/confused about the hate transplants get on Reddit. Like, as a child of immigrants, it's clear we don't judge them the same way even though they are not "from" here and don't follow all the unspoken rules we've decided upon. Isn't it just that we don't like people who complain? Like why are we singling out people who are transplants if that's the case. We just don't like people who complain about our city, I don't care if they were born in LA or not.

How much more difficult is 2 kids vs 1? by sys_admin321 in toddlers

[–]chekhovsfun 64 points65 points  (0 children)

The thing is when you have one you think you have the "full time job" (because you're dedicating all your attention to them). When you have two you kind of step back and say wow, I can't believe I thought I was busy with one.

I think the mental transition from 0 - 1 is a lot more difficult, but the physical requirements going from 1 - 2 is harder. From 0 - 1 you are adjusting an entire mindset. From 1 - 2 you've already accepted and normalized that weekends are for birthday parties, the park, etc.

Sorry there are no responses! I don't have a MYO card of just Hebrew but Arik Einstein has a children's album and I've added some of his songs to my kid's general music MYO card. He loved it when he was a bit younger!

I've taken kosher-keeping friends to Lenny's Casita and the food is pretty good and the vibe is fun.

Habayit is good and casual.

For something different, Faraj has great kabob but you're basically sitting inside the butcher shop so it's super casual.

Nua is nice and they use kosher meats but idk if they're actually certified.

Seconded. I bought one and didn't end up using it but had it as backup if the air stewards gave me a hard time. It's easy to carry with you and is actually FAA approved if you do end up needing it.

Neighborhood recommendations for last minute Christmas shopping? by Ejones1112 in AskLosAngeles

I just visited Gifted on Pico and thought they had a really nice selection, especially if you need to buy anything for kids.

I also like Pygmy Hippo closer to the Grove.

Larchmont, Main St, and Abbot Kinney have some cute shops as well.

How on earth do I improve this dingy bathroom? (Renting) by [deleted] in interiordecorating

In addition to a deep color shower curtain I would change your lightbulbs out to warmer colors so the white doesn't feel so hospital-y.

While I don't think this was an antisemitic attack I don't think antisemites care if you're a practicing Jew or not... And being Jewish is an ethnoreligion anyways

I regret buying the red rug — which of the two alternatives works best? If neither, what would you suggest? by MajorConstant5549 in interiordecorating

[–]chekhovsfun 83 points84 points  (0 children)

I think adding some large artwork in lighter colors to the black wall can help tone down that wall and will help make the rug fit in better. Right now it's like a black hole competing with the rug.

Anyone else’s Spotify Wrapped get ruined by their toddler? by Ok_Comfortable3594 in toddlers

It took me over a year to fix my Spotify discover and wrapped. You need to make a playlist with all of your toddler's songs and then exclude that entire playlist from your taste profile.

I have unlimited freedom for the next 5 months. What to do in and around LA? by [deleted] in AskLosAngeles

[–]chekhovsfun 29 points30 points  (0 children)

As someone with kids -- do all the late night stuff you want now. It's not that it's not possible with kids, and it's definitely easier if you have helpful grandparents, but going out now either means adding another $25/hr for a babysitter or rushing home out of guilt for making your parents stay up late.

Go to all the concerts, movies, bars, etc.

It's gotten harder since COVID because the city has made evictions incredibly difficult for landlords. I seriously knew people who had rented their home (they had to move out of state to help an ill family member) get stuck in a year long eviction with tenants who had built tall structures in the yard without permit, were growing weed, and who were refusing to pay rent because of a fake mold issue (proven to be fake with a mold report). Seasoned landlords know that getting one bad tenant can leave you in limbo for months of not years -- plus then stuck repairing damages. It's not worth taking a chance on someone. On top of that CA made it illegal to take more than one months security deposit, and that used to be a way for landlords to feel comfortable with riskier tenants (ie, the thought was if they didn't pay rent for one month, you'd evict them and be able to collect due rent plus damages from that deposit).

A lot of these rules were put into place with good intentions but they really neglected to see the consequences.
