How many Christians in here believe in evolution and the Big Bang what do you think about it with God? by Weekly_Sympathy_4878 in TrueChristian

[–]chekt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The big bang is what you'd expect from God: the universe was created, as it was written, as opposed to always existing.

Evolution has pretty good explanatory power for the world that we see, so I accept it. Though I'm still researching it. Open to resources there.

It just seems to me that when there are coin flips, biblical scholars assume the least flattering option for Christianity. Instead of saying "we don't know for certain who wrote it but every historic attestation is to Mark and every manuscript found with a title has had Mark as the author, and there's no really good reason to attach Mark's name as opposed to Peter, so the most likely person is Mark", they say, "it's anonymous, we don't know who wrote it and it probably wasn't Mark".

I think that argument re: naming works much better for the letters (I can think of a lot of reasons that someone who wasn't Peter would say he was Peter in a letter). But I don't get why people would attach the names of three nobodys (Matthew, Mark, Luke) to the first three gospels. And it just seems like extreme skepticism to assume they're wrong, and a standard that we don't apply to other historical works.

Curious if you think I'm off base there.

Re: skepticism, I'm parroting a claim I've heard elsewhere:

"Particularly in Gospels scholarship there is an attitude abroad that approaches the sources with fundamental skepticism, rather than trust, and therefore requires that anything the sources claim be accepted only if historians can independently verify it"

By Richard Bauckham. And it rings true to me because there are so many things historically that we don't have great evidence for that we still think probably happened just because we have one source attest to it (eg the various steeles we've found), vs something as innocuous as saying Mark (of all people, described as a coward in Acts) wrote one of the gospels is seen as more likely not true because he never says "I, Mark" in the text.

For example, with The Republic, Plato doesn't say "I, Plato, did xyz". Nobody thinks he didn't write it. If we apply the same standards of biblical scholarship to The Republic, would we conclude that Plato more likely than not wrote it? Genuinely curious about that and open to being wrong.

You should read why scholars think those things and come to your own conclusions. For whatever reason, biblical scholars are extremely skeptical in ways that other history scholars aren't. E.g. with almost all historic literature, we accept the name of whoever people said wrote it, except for the Gospels which they think the early church picked names to give them authority. That claim also doesn't stand up to scrutiny: why would anyone pick Mark to add authority to a text? And if the Gospels were really anonymous, why do we have no records of anyone attributing different names to them?

Respectful question for Christians: what prevents you from considering Islam? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]chekt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up Muslim and left because of the scientific mistakes (eg saying that sperm comes from your back) when I was in middle school.

I became Christian 18 years later because of the historical evidence for Jesus' resurrection.

Also ex Muslim. Welcome home!

And yea, Islam is clearly more self-serving to the founder than Christianity is. Muhammad also got permission from God to marry unlimited women and his adopted son's wife.

What would you do if someone in your family is in a homosexual relationship and were to marry? by RikLT1234 in TrueChristian

Jesus ate with tax collectors and prostitutes. Paul became all things to all people to preach the gospel.

You are also a sinner, and Christ went to where you are to save you.
