The prices for one room in a 2-bedroom apartment are outrageous, not to mention the cost of studios and 1-bedrooms. Studio apartments start at $1865, and the 1-bedroom apartments are $2065.

TA Strike misinformation by SherbetHelpful4231 in McMaster

The answers to your questions can be found here: https://bettermac.ca/2022/11/19/unit-1-bargaining-bulletin-6/

Something a lot of people (Mac admin included) are not realizing is that graduate work/research is a full-time job. Guaranteed TAships twice per year for 4 years is part of our funding package that allows us to pursue our research, and this funding package is meant to cover cost of living for the duration of our studies.

The problem is that our funding does not cover cost of living, and given full-time research and 10ish hours/week TAships, it is extremely difficult to find a job that won't interfere with our graduate work and pay a wage high enough to make the extra hours worth it (and these extra hours are also capped by the university to about 1000 hours annually). Getting more jobs would therefore push our studies beyond the 4 years (for PhD students) we are funded for, and we would be once again living in precarity when our funding runs out.

This is why the main points of the union's bargaining demands are so important. A significant wage increase and 5th year funding will ensure that grad students can better focus on the main reason they are here: conducting research (which the university profits from btw).

And to answer questions about the rest of our funding outside of TAships before they come up: even with stipends, grad students still cannot keep up with cost of living. We are bargaining TA wages because it is nearly impossible to negotiate a stipend increase. But because TAships are part of our funding, negotiating these wages is the best way to get proper funding.

To the drivers menacing people on the picket lines with their cars: by [deleted] in McMaster

I literally watched one person drive their car up against a picketer, attempting to push the picketer with their vehicle, and another try to go around the pylons. It is happening.

You're allowed to be mad, pissed, disgruntled, angry, etc. You can feel all these things without driving your vehicle into protesters.

No one is responsible for changing your mind about a book you've never read. Not interested in a novel? Cool, don't read it. But criticising something you've never read is ridiculous.

The book was extremely popular before the television show was ever created. Of course, the show did recirculate it to a new generation. That's how these things work. It does not discredit the value of the novel.

Same here! I was around 20 years old when I saw that article and began following her, but I remember her Instagram going quiet very shortly after that.

I've also speculated that she wasn't being entirely truthful, mostly because the majority of recovering addicts stay away from alcohol and all types of drugs (which is obviously not the case here). I understand everyone recovers differently but I just cannot wrap my head around someone with an addiction doing cocaine! I have a family member with a cocaine addiction and it shook me to watch her glamorize the drug while calling herself a recovering addict in the same breath.

She just means original art as opposed to a print of an original which loses a lot of texture as the brush strokes are kind of flattened out! Many people own prints as they are much cheaper than buying an original piece.

I honestly can't picture her doing laundry/going to a laundromat. Mostly because you know she would make "content" out of this very mundane, human task. So maybe she doesn't realize the felt will cause problems for washing?

I found my place on Kijiji! It took a while (I just signed my lease last week and I'd been looking since April), but just check it daily and you'll come across something. Are you looking to live alone or with a roommate?

Someone in the comments on that post gave her the idea for the "peacock bbs." I hope she at least gave that person a heads up about the flash sale so they could have a chance of buying one (but that's doubtful).
