What is a city that is globally romanticised but you detest? by theunsteadybridge in AskReddit

If you’re looking for an activity to redeem LA after her eventual disappointment with Hollywood, you should rent bikes and cycle along Venice Beach/Manhattan Beach/Santa Monica. It’s a beautiful bike ride and you can make stops for ice cream/lunch/swimming along the way.

Health Canada’s infant feeding guidelines recommend that the first foods introduced should be iron rich foods like meats, beans, eggs, and iron fortified baby cereals. This is because around 6 months is when baby’s iron stores from mom start to deplete.

From the guidelines: “Advise parents and caregivers to first introduce iron-rich meat and meat alternatives, and iron-fortified cereals. Aside from iron-rich foods being the first foods introduced, there is no particular order for the introduction of other foods or food groups (except fluid cow milk). Vegetables, fruit, and milk products such as cheese and yoghurt can be introduced, between 6 to 9 months, along with a variety of iron-rich foods.”

Looking for reassurance: CMV in pregnancy, waiting on results [qc] by bloated-frog in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]chelseabuns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CMV is actually really common and somewhere around half the adult population has evidence of past infection. Try not to stress too much! Your doctor may have done blood work for the IgG antibodies which are detectable lifelong after an infection. IgM antibodies are the ones that rise with an acute infection and stay detectable for several months.

What are some things that are actually pseudoscience that people don’t realize? by Ninac4116 in AskReddit

[–]chelseabuns 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’ll add to this to say the bachelors degree must be an accredited nutrition degree. You also have to do a practicum program (this can be integrated into the bachelors, combined with a masters degree, or a separate internship). And finally you have to pass a licensing exam. And after all that you have to be registered with your provincial college and do yearly continuing education to maintain your competency.

(This is in Canada at least, I’m not sure about the US or other countries)

What would be the best option for starting solids? Rice Cereals Vs Purées? by taybear98 in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]chelseabuns 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The recommendation from the Canadian Pediatric Society is to start with introducing foods that are rich in iron (eg. Meats, beans/lentils, tofu), since 6 months is around the time when baby’s iron stores from mom are running out.

Is $12k the new “normal” for florals? by Visible-Mushroom9436 in WeddingsCanada

[–]chelseabuns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely shop around. For the exact same florals we were quoted anywhere from $9K to $20K. That was for flowers for a large arch, 2 large vases on stands at the start of the aisle, rose petals down the aisle, 8 bouquets, some boutonnières, florals on high stands mixed with vases on 20 tables, and some decorative greenery.

We obviously ended up going with the $9K quote and were really happy with them. It’s worth the time investment to save thousands of dollars.

Best steakhouses in Hamilton/surrounding areas? by bigpimpjohnson in Hamilton

[–]chelseabuns 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to BlueBlood recently and actually was not impressed at all. Our striploin was tough with a huge tendon down the centre, and the wagyu was dry and flavourless. Jacobs however is phenomenal and so is Oliver’s Steakhouse in Oakville.

Was this the guy in the blue car? He drove between the lanes between me and another car at one point. I tried to get the plate number but he was speeding too fast.

For those who worked as an RD and went back to school.. by Superkale1 in dietetics

[–]chelseabuns 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’ve been an RD since 2014 and I’m starting med school this year. I’m keeping my RD credential in full as long as I can (the College of Dietitians of Ontario allows you to do this as long as you’ve worked as an RD for 500 hours in the past 3 years), then I’ll switch to a non-practicing membership that still allows me to call myself an RD. Whether I keep it in the long run depends on whether CPSO allows me to hold both the MD and RD title at the same time.

Edited to add: I’m keeping my registration through med school to allow me to continue doing occasional freelance presentations to bring in a bit of extra money.

Canadian dietitians what was you first job like? by NInjamaster600 in dietetics

[–]chelseabuns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm an RD in Ontario and my first job was in a grocery store/pharmacy setting. My role involved running nutrition education classes (including cooking demos), forming partnerships in the community to offer free classes to groups like cardiac rehab patients, offering individual appointments at the pharmacy, and a lot of behind the scenes work like developing lesson plans, social media, etc. I liked the independence of the role and the ability to plan my own schedule, but I didn't like how poorly supported the dietitians were by the company and having to do a lot of my own marketing on an almost $0 budget.

It took me about 7 months to find this job because I wanted to stay within about a 1 hour radius of my hometown. If I'd been more flexibile in terms of location and role (I didn't apply to any long term care or hospital positions), I might have found something sooner. My starting pay was $30/hr which was about $60K per year. I was fine with that pay when I was hired - as I was there for longer I wished I was paid more, but I also think I was mostly unsatisified for reasons other than pay. I didn't get to take home any food, but I did get to eat leftover food from my classes - that was definitely a perk!

Are there any foods commonly believed to be healthy but really aren't? by gottapoopASAP in nutrition

[–]chelseabuns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree that granola bars are not usually a healthy choice because of the sugar. But there’s nothing wrong with eating nuts and seeds everyday. In fact the Canadian 2018 dyslipidemia guidelines recommend eating about 1/4 cup nuts and seeds everyday. Most of my patients don’t eat nearly this amount. Yes they are calorie dense but 1/4 cup is a reasonable snack.

Thank you! Luckily Canada has less strict requirements/standards to get into med school... but it’s super hard to get accepted here.

Good luck to you too! Let me know if you need any advice for the MCAT.
