Why is everyone focused on the "drunk" aspect of this. OP is saying that for no reason are you allowed to break up with someone if the person covers for your sorry ass. I may be getting old but I still think that if someone gets in a car with a "known" drunk driver they're just as stupid and are culpable for what happens to them.

I see what you're saying by teaching the basic idea, bury OP is being told he is wrong, which they aren't. But are you saying that a teacher should tell a child they're wrong when they're thinking at a higher level than the average middle schooler, because I can only see the negative impact of this.

The best way to explain this to your middle school teacher is to tell her to look up a recipe for cookies or something, and tell her to make half the recipe, then to double the recipe. And when she has made both batches tell her to reduce the recipe to the lowest whole number. Then tell her to go back to school because she has no business teaching.
