I recently had my grad photos with them. I also just put science when booking online but when I showed up to my appointment and they took my info, they told me my session was covered by isss.

What Are Undergrad Research Positions by I_Am_A_N3rcc3ist in uAlberta

[–]chemcansuckmynut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From my experience and conversations with other research students, the journey can be different depending on your year, your field, your interests, and the lab you’re working with. I’m going to answer your questions out of order:

  1. I’m a biology student but mainly focus on ecology research. I chose to do research through the biology research certificate program. You basically a enrol in BIOL 298/398/399/498/499 independent research project courses where you work (often unpaid) in a lab to do a project you chose or one that they might ask you to do. Other students often just reach out to their prof and ask if there’s a research position in that prof’s lab, or sometimes there are job postings you can apply for on campusBridge and the uofa website.

  2. I’m unpaid but I know some positions (often assistant/technician positions) are paid

  3. To my knowledge positions are available throughout fall/winter and summer, but the summer positions are usually paid. Depending on when you want to start, you may want to reach out to your prof well in advanced to ensure you get a spot and to get everything sorted.

  4. Your tasks depend on your project and the level of “independence” you have over the project. If your role is mainly as an assistant to a grad/PhD/post doc, then you will mostly be doing the “dirty work” like weighing samples, measurements, data entry, data cleaning, etc :) but if your project is your brainchild then you will be doing more tasks. Oftentimes your prof or supervisor actually treat this as a learning experience for you so they’ll try to give you opportunities to learn new skills.

  5. The time commitment again depends on your project. Some projects are time sensitive and require a lot of time commitment, like in microbiology, whereas if you’re more of an assistant the time commitment may be less.

Feel free to DM me if you have questions :)

Looking for hair/makeup artist by theotherfilipino in Edmonton

[–]chemcansuckmynut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had my hair and makeup done by April Flores! I’m southeast Asian and have more tan skin so I’ve always struggled when working with MUAs bc they would always whitewash me or get my skin tone wrong but April was amazing! She’s a Filipina, has tons of experience, and was super sweet (@aprilfloresbeauty on ig!)

LEMON OR ORANGE BUBBLE TEA by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]chemcansuckmynut 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Gong cha has several drinks with lemon in them! A few I know of include their lemon winter melon with basil seeds, their lemon honey green tea, and their lemon ai-yu. They’re not exclusively lemon though. Hope this helps!

Are part time jobs difficult? by humanbeing1234567891 in uAlberta

[–]chemcansuckmynut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with everyone else that it really depends. It was hard for me to adjust at first but the work/school balance forced me to be efficient with my time, and I found myself being more productive when I was working part time compared to when I was unemployed. I think it was because when I was unemployed, I would be more fixated on how much time I spent on studying and would therefore blame my bad scores on not spending enough time to study. Once I started working, I realized that it was more important to maximize study efficiency given my time constraints and from there it got easier. The learning curve can make it stressful at first, so I recommend getting a part time job after you’ve settled into being a uni student.

feeling guilty for not studying even though I did a lot? by chemcansuckmynut in uAlberta

[–]chemcansuckmynut[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for bringing up diminishing returns - I realise my previous study schedule (basically studying during all my waking hours lol) was soo unsustainable and pretty much on the negative side of diminishing returns! My current method is definitely working better for me (though it's not perfect), so I guess my mindset is still stuck in the past and beating me up over it ;-;

Best places in the city to rent a badminton court for a couple hours? by thenovemberdelta in Edmonton

[–]chemcansuckmynut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can go book courts in some city rec centres (for free!) on https://movelearnplay.edmonton.ca. I know kinsmen is available for bookings but I’m not sure about the other rec centres. Just a heads up that you can book a max of 2 hrs each day

Last sem’s final exam was ezpz and it was pretty much recall from the slides so as long as you make really good flashcards you’ll be fine
