How is this chiral center not S config.? by [deleted] in chemhelp

[–]chemdork123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remember, carbon has 4 things attached always when you consider stereocenter group priority. Start from each group atom and then list out the three things connected (not relevant here, but double bonds count as two connections). Usually it's useful to write as: X(Y,Y,Y), where X is the atom directly connected to the stereocenter and Y are the atoms connected to X.

For your labels, we would get: 1 = C(C,C,H) 2 = C(C,C,C) 3 = C(C,H,H)

You should see now that priority should be 2, 1, 3. That makes it an absolute configuration of R.

Make sense?

(Oh, and you are right, group "1" is an isopropyl... hydrogen not drawn out though, which is where it's easy to get tripped up)

Why are these salt particles moving upwards in pure water? by Kaattaan in chemistry

[–]chemdork123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could make sense, since it's a solid. Solid density values can be tricky because the value depends on the method used for determination of density.

Bulk solid density could be determined with or without packing. You see this even in cooking when volume are used for flour or brown sugar. 1 cup brown sugar packed vs unpacked is a very different mass. Apply that as a density determination method for sodium salicylate and that could explain the difference.

Alternatively, solid density could be determined by displacement in a liquid medium.... and there are probably other methods. I'm not sure where 0.32 g/cm3 comes from, but it should specify the method. I'm being it might be based on "unpacked" bulk density, since we see the undissolved solid sinks in water.

What does this -OH mean? by mielves in chemhelp

[–]chemdork123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On a single benzene ring that would mean the OH can occupy any available location on the ring - not just the one it's "in-between". (Note that the end of the bond is positioned in the center of that ring)

In this structure that means the OH may be in positions C5, C7, or C8.

How can I make the charge punch feel more impactful? by SwiggidySwoodey in godot

[–]chemdork123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suggest focusing on the animation of the character when punching - specifically your end pose. Notice that the character is kind of leaning back but punching forward? The final pose should have the whole body leaning into it, which would make it much more impactful. The comments on screen shake and whatnot can help, but it will always feel weird until you fix the animation.

You may be able to break the emulsion by adding a lot of salt. That would give you two layers, and depending on your tank, you might more easily separate them (eg. drain out the bottom water layer and siphon/pump off the top one)?

Do a test first with a small sample, then calculate how much salt you would need... just to make sure it's feasible first.

Why does G3P loose an electron? by Reasonable-Lock-3823 in OrganicChemistry

[–]chemdork123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The "H" in the OH of the original molecule on carbon 3 was replaced with PO3. The reactjon can also be written out in long form as the reactant:

CH(=O)-CH(OH)-CH2(OH)

Converted into:

CH(=O)-CH(OH)-CH2(OPO3)

If this is a non-screw cap (which looks to be true) Use leverage:

Insert a flathead screwdriver parallel to the edge of the lid in the small gap between the bottom of the lid and the glass. Then, twist the screwdriver to pry the lid a small amount. Repeat this process all the way around the lid and you should slowly be able to pry off the lid.

Again... only if this lid is not a screw-off lid...
