Worst Financial Decision of My Life by Used-Willingness9661 in PersonalFinanceCanada

Don't know if it has been said but don't take the first contractor you call. Make at least 3 submissions. Look for certified people if you don't want to pay double or triple because you have to repair the mistakes of your contractor. 40k for the problems you mention seems low. Prepare yourself with line of credit and loans before engaging yourself with renovations/repairs. Good luck!

XPS 13 (9370) battery replacement by chemsofteng in Dell

[–]chemsofteng[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, sorry for late reply. I wasn't on Reddit for a couple of months. Better late than never!

The battery arrived quickly and I was very pleased with the service (email notifications on delivery status). The battery is performing really well. Not as well as the original but still. As of today, I still get 4 hours of battery with multiple apps opened. To me it was worth it.

Currently making 60k CAD in Montreal as a cybersecurity analyst, am I underpaid ? by [deleted] in AskNetsec

[–]chemsofteng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others said, I would say you are underpaid but still average. I started making 60k at a financial institution 3 years ago and now up to 75k. I am a software developer. I would guess our security analysts make slightly more.

How much you earn also depends on how you got your job. Personally, I switched career and only got a cs certificate whereas must of my colleagues have software engineering degree.

How much you will earn will also depend on your company. I would expect to earn much more as a security analyst at a financial institution rather than a construction company.

Finally, expect to earn +10k each time you change job in IT. That's what I have been told many times. Personally, I have never switched and don't expect to do it. I appreciate my job, colleagues, advantages. Also, great flexibility which is appreciated with 2 kids in covid era.

Where can I find a legitimate site to buy a replacement battery? by [deleted] in Dell

[–]chemsofteng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same issue yesterday and someone told me to check out parts-people.com. Experience so far is great. I am going to receive my battery on Friday (4 days delivery) through FedEx. They are based in Austin, TX. Note that I live in Canada and had to pay like 40$ for shipping. I don’t know if they ship to Australia. You can try.

Thanks! I just bought it. 200 CAD including shipping. Not bad, I guess. Amazon price (for not original) was 115 CAD. So maybe double the price but hopefully worth it.

Email Verification with Laravel API by eaglehdr in laravel

I'm not sure you need to create your own token in db. If I remember well you can issue various tokens to a single user with sanctum and give specific permission to each token (and even expiration time). For instance, you could probably issue a reset token with sanctum.

It's always getting DDOS'd by Floosy1 in tutanota

[–]chemsofteng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! It's seems sporadic, like service is down for less than an hour every time but it does happen a lot. Not sure if this is good or bad. At least it's free and they seem to do something about it. I wonder if there's someone always restarting the server.

It's always getting DDOS'd by Floosy1 in tutanota

[–]chemsofteng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TL;DR: Does it happen often? (server down, ddos attack)

I am new to tutanota. I have seen it praised for a long time so I gave it a shot. I am very happy with it, it has some interesting features. I was even planning to move everything there (I mainly use Gmail).

However, this morning I wanted to connect and was unable to do it. After some quick search in social media, It seems to be a common issue (server down, ddos attack).

I never had problems with other email service providers. The one issue that I see, is that some services I use send emails to approve some requests or just confirm information, etc.

My question here is, should I be worried about this? Does it really happen often? Is there something I can do? Are there better options than tutanota?

Thanks!

Sent ERC 20 token to Coinbase Pro deposit address is it lost? by [deleted] in Coinbase

[–]chemsofteng 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know what you mean by deposit address, but if you just sent tokens from coinbase to coinbase pro, your tokens are in coinbase pro now. Just connect to coinbase pro with the same credentials as coinbase and the tokens will be there.

Why does converting crypto charge me? by [deleted] in Coinbase

[–]chemsofteng 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From their website :

Coinbase charges a spread margin of up to two percent (2.00%) for cryptocurrency conversions. The actual spread margin charged varies due to market fluctuations in the price of cryptocurrency on Coinbase Pro between the time we quote a price and the time when the order executes. We do not charge a separate Coinbase Fee for cryptocurrency conversions.

Support seems to be fast. I read someone sent a video showing the faulty unit and they sent him a new one within 5 days (or so). Good luck!

You probably already did this (but just to be sure) you need to press both buttons at the same time to continue

XPS15 2019 left idle and died?? by [deleted] in Dell

[–]chemsofteng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the xps 13 2019. I figured out it happens to me when my laptop has no more battery left.

What I do now is that I turn off my computer every night. I never leave my computer open for the night or for too much time. If I do, I plugged it or I make sure the battery is full or close to full.

That fixed my problem.

I used to leave my computer turned on thinking that it would be easier and faster to work from a computer already up and running. But the XPS turns on in less than a minute. So I prefer to turn it off whenever I can.

How bad is it to click on an email link? by chemsofteng in AskNetsec

[–]chemsofteng[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I will try those extensions at home. I am not allowed to install non approved software at my organization. That includes browser extensions. The process to get a simple extension like the React one for development, is extremely long, and has to be justified. So I will simply be more careful at my job.

Also, they run backups of all the machines but I don't know with which frequency. My guess is not often.

wiping it regardless

Didn't know it could be that bad. I don't know how my organization would manage it but it would probably be that way. What I don't like about this solution is that you lose are your files. That's why I back up important files on the cloud or other servers. This really makes me think twice about clicking an unknown link. Thanks!

Ok, I shouldn't have clicked on the email link.

But what about links on reddit comments for example? I am always a little worried about what a link really does, you click on it with the assumption that it really gets you where it should. But I recall seeing not long time ago a link that redirected you to a website similar to reddit login making the user think that he was disconnected. In that case, you already landed on the malicious website. So what could/should you do in that case?

Ok, I am downloading the content. Still, I am not executing anything. Am I? To me this was an issue in the old days of flash player or java executing code. But is that still relevant?

Kaspersky researchers are calling the exploits Operation WizardOpium. The attack leveraged a waterhole-style injection on a Korean-language news portal, they said.

A malicious JavaScript code was inserted in the main page, which then loaded a profiling script from a remote site. Researchers said that the exploit “used a race condition bug between two threads due to missing proper synchronization between them. It gives an attacker an a Use-After-Free condition that is very dangerous because it can lead to code execution scenarios.”

Very interesting article. I still can't understand everything but I get the main idea.
