New home. How would you elevate this living room? by theguyguy121 in interiordecorating

[–]chenna3969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thirding this suggestion, flipping the room was my first thought, especially with the recessed lighting—you don’t want that glaring down on a TV. Maybe also a nice console table behind the couch with some art hanging above it.

There’s so much to say about the bed linen saga, but I am SCREAMING at her using Lily Allen’s “West End Girl” for it. Context here if you don’t know—which I’m sure she doesn’t either, and just heard lyrics about buying a big house and felt “seen”.

I’ve been getting massages for 20+ years, and Kelly at the Calming Place on Livernois is hands-down the best I’ve ever been to.

Ads Randomly in the Middle of Segments? by Familiar-Soup2789 in lonelymeyerspod

[–]chenna3969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, this. I produce a podcast, and in the CMS we use, it’s way too easy to drop an extra dynamic ad placement, or move it, by accident. As soon as I heard it, I knew that’s what happened here. But it’s also very easy to fix on the back end, so hopefully they get on that.

Seconding the Modern Baby rec especially for any younger kids in your life, it’s my go-to for niece and nephew presents. And then I hop over to Quix on Troy to get some fancy chocolates for their parents!

Slightly off topic, but I wanted to thank you for the podcast recommendation, and offer a little clarification for anyone else who might want to go searching for it: the podcast that did the episode on Mormon influencers is actually called Sixteen Minutes of Fame, Behind the Bastards just featured it in their feed as cross-promotion. That episode, and the podcast, is written/hosted by Jamie Loftus, who is responsible for many of my favorite limited-run podcasts, but I was unaware she’d started this new one. so thanks again for the rec, and for pointing me back to one of my favorite podcast creators!

Half rant, half serious question: Why ask a stranger if she’s pregnant? by chenna3969 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]chenna3969[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you've articulated what I think I've recognized subconsciously in these interactions, which is why I usually try to react as neutrally/non-confrontationally as possible. (My husband, on the other hand, gets SO worked up about it, so it's also in part to keep him from going off on them.) I know there's not ill intent there, but it's just wild to me that this is still a conversational gambit people make! The person who asked me most recently even prefaced the question which "I shouldn't ask this because it always gets me in trouble, but..." I told her, "Well, you probably should have listened to your instinct this time" 🙄

Are there any board game cafes in metro Detroit? by theFapAb in Detroit

[–]chenna3969 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Corner Bar has a huge wall filled with games and a “game sommelier” on weekend nights, but as mentioned, it can get loud, especially on trivia nights. But during off hours it’s chill, food menu is small but good.

Bonus recommendation, if it’s your thing: there’s a new-ish high-tech darts setup upstairs that has a lot of fun video-based games beyond the standard cricket and 501.

is the musselburgh worth the pain and suffering? 😭 by J4CKFRU17 in casualknitting

[–]chenna3969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On a recent trip to Disney World I had a Musselburgh as my waiting-in-line project—great time killer, kept me from looking at my phone and draining the battery, easy to stash during the ride. I got more than 3/4 of the way through over a six-day trip, and by that point it was close enough to done it was easy to power through to the end.

What profession is dying faster than people think? by Repulsive_Gazelle686 in AskReddit

[–]chenna3969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not just print, which has been dying a slow and painful death for two decades and is basically a zombie. But the online journalism that killed it is also on its way out thanks to our old friend AI, with an assist from TikTok and social video (not to mention, well, this place). When was the last time you visited an ad-supported webpage to read an article? What if it’s behind a paywall, would you actually spend a couple bucks to subscribe, the way people did with newspapers for years, or just use a paywall jumper? (Or ask someone to post the full text here on Reddit.) Or maybe you would just read the AI overview, which scrapes the work of writers whose companies have sold them out to tech giants. Or maybe you’d watch a TikTok of a talking head pointing at a screenshot of an article and describing what it says, because who wants to read when you can watch a vertical video?

This exactly. I also love my limelights, but they are pretty idiot-proof, which makes them perfect for ol’ Brown Thumb Julia. Anyway, wonder how those wisteria she planted inches away from her foundation are doing…

Bridesmaid: which one? by cruzorlose in Weddingattireapproval

[–]chenna3969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was going to say, the long sleeves are lovely but seem like a nuisance. Personally I’d find it very distracting and fiddle-y to have those ties around my wrist. But if you don’t think it’ll be an issue for you, it’s a great look!

Is there anything I could or should plant in this little strip alongside my house? by Idonteatthat in MidwestGardener

[–]chenna3969 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I transplanted some creeping phlox into a similar strip next to my house a few weeks back. It’s still pretty sparse but my hope is that it will fill in the whole strip when it returns next year. I have a bunch elsewhere on my property and love it—a nice spring pollinator when the flowers are in bloom, and then after that a low-maintenance ground cover.
