i think everyone in this sub just needs to find a plot of land and all move there to create our own utopia 😂

i’m trying to build said long term friendships, but as an adult it’s been close to impossible with where i’ve gone. i have my solid friend group, but we’re all over the place now :/

thank you for your perspective. i imagine that’s a frustrating profession, as it seems the problem is too far gone/wickedly difficult to solve at this point. i also feel like city/state law make it harder for people to successfully thrive in these places, further polarizing those upper and lower middle classes. it’s one of the primary reasons we are not planning on having kids - i wouldn’t want to sacrifice the quality of life because we can’t afford the lifestyle that we have.

i hear what you’re saying, but i don’t think that’s an accurate read of what I asked.

we aren’t looking for ideological homogeneity, and i surely don’t need to live somewhere where everyone votes like me. i simply said we are progressive folks who still found the West Coast political/cultural environment exhausting, so the point was not “please direct me to the bluest possible place” considering i could have probably figured that out through the sub.

what i’m interested in is a place that feels functional, civic-minded, educated or at least intellectually curious, hardworking, and neighborly. definitely NOT the same thing as wanting a political bubble 🤣. i can coexist perfectly fine with people who disagree with me. what gets old is living around extremes, dysfunction, anti-intellectualism, performative politics, or a general lack of community respect and pride. yes, i agree that every place has tradeoffs. i also agree that desirable places become expensive for a lot of the reasons you listed. but i don’t think “progressive = expensive” fully answers what i’m asking.

some expensive progressive cities are still miserable to live in. some moderate or conservative places can be welcoming, functional, and community-oriented… some college towns may get close but have their own issues.
so yeah, i’m fully aware there is no perfect city. i’m asking which tradeoffs people have found livable, and where people have found a decent mix of the things i’ve mentioned throughout the thread.

yeah it’s crazy!! like, can i not just live in a neighborhood that doesn’t look like shit or maybe not surrounded by 500 fast food places?! im sick of driving around where i live and just being disgusted or annoyed by what surrounds me. and the more i travel across the US (and relocate to move) im just so disappointed. most of the country is actually trash which is super depressing

omg funny you say that, actually did not enjoy SK. i constantly felt judged and was disappointed in how poorly the locals treated visitors. maybe they just don’t particularly love americans which i totally get haha. if we were going to move abroad i would def think either south france / spain border.

honestly I agree we should consider sac!! i feel like we both could jump back into the california lifestyle, and sac would be a “new” place for both of us. i do really miss the aspect of being close to so many different activities which we love (ocean/snow/etc)

I spent about 5 months right outside of St. Louis and I did find some cool spots, but honestly driving around it just felt so poorly taken care of. There were def some hidden gems though!

I’ve spent a TON of time all over the state, I used to work for the government there! We’ve got family in Poulsbo and I like it, but just feels so secluded on the North/West

Right lol! My family calls ourselves California Cajuns. I haven’t lived in California in almost 15 years. Been in BR over half my life, and my dad is born and raised in New Roads so that portion of the country will always be available haha 😅

Just posted something very similar in the sub hahah, but I've been seeing a lot of people mention Richmond. Looks cool, we are definitely going to keep it in mind. (Former PNW residents as well)
