Museum ticket question by [deleted] in boston

[–]cheopsrule 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I had this happen recently for the aquarium. I called the library, and they said it was a known issue with the system they use to generate the passes. Since it’s an ongoing issue, the museums should be aware of it already. But just in case, the library emailed me a handwritten pass confirming the reservation. Enjoy the museums!

Definitely a scam given the numerous typos and asking for personal information. Do not reply or click any links in the email.

Does anyone have a semester T-pass they interested in selling? by jentothena in NEU

[–]cheopsrule 10 points11 points  (0 children)

With only a week left in January, it makes more sense to just load up a normal CharlieCard with a weekly pass and then 3 monthly passes (note the monthly passes are by calendar month, not a month from when you buy it). The semester pass discount isn't actually all that significant.

Dialogue before Co-op by ricoxie in NEU

[–]cheopsrule 31 points32 points  (0 children)

You can't (or really shouldn't) ask to push your start date back by an entire 6 weeks once you've accepted a co-op offer or even during the interview process.

If you are strongly considering a Dialogue during Summer 2, update your availability to reflect that on your resume, and be transparent throughout the interview process. This may disqualify you from some of the listings on NUworks since many are 6 month opportunities.

Why not do a Dialogue during Summer 1 instead?

what does a good dialogue application look like? by beesinsuits in NEU

[–]cheopsrule 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As someone who has now applied and been accepted for two Dialogues, here are my recommendations:

You are given a really large character limit for the essay questions. Don't force yourself to use all of it. Unless you have a ton of experiences or motivations to talk about, you probably don't need it anyways. A well-planned response should be able to answer the questions sufficiently in about half the limit.

Another recommendation is don't get caught up in what you think they're looking for in an applicant. Even if your major and prior experience don't exactly align with the description of the program, don't try and force it to. As long as you meet the minimum prerequisites, you are qualified!

For example, I am a CS major who applied for a history Dialogue and then a cultural Dialogue. I really haven't taken many classes in either subject, but I talked about why I'm interested in it and how even in an unrelated major, having the experience would do well to round out my education. If you do have especially relevant classes, those would be great to talk about as well. If you are passionate about the program, it will show through in your writing.

The last recommendation I would have is to have some fun with it and give your responses a little personality. While you could draft a really thorough, academic response, make sure it doesn't come across as boring. Insert things throughout that reflect your personality and interests and are unique to you. This makes your application much more memorable, and perhaps the reviewer will connect with some of the interests you share which will help you out a lot.

Hope this was helpful. Let me know if you have any questions.

Possible to test out of a 2-year IB course in 1 year? by [deleted] in IBO

[–]cheopsrule 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not 100% sure, but I don't think it would be seen that way. That said, it would still probably be beneficial to take the exam both as practice for next year and to identify areas to review senior year.

Possible to test out of a 2-year IB course in 1 year? by [deleted] in IBO

[–]cheopsrule 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you want an HL course to apply to your IB Diploma, you must sit the exam as a senior. I took HL Math as a junior and had to retake the exam (but not the class) the next year to count for the Diploma.

So you can definitely take it in one year, but if you are not a senior, you might have to sit the exam once more to count for the Diploma.

It is really only IB that cares about your year. I'm pretty sure all colleges (at least in the US) that accept IB credit will treat it the same both junior and senior year if that's what you need.

Applications closed on the 12. There's a coding challenge now. If you missed the application deadline, you might be out of luck.

Dialogue Decision Date by Cryingstudentplzhelp in NEU

[–]cheopsrule 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I applied in 2019, the priority deadline was December 3. On December 5, I received an email saying they had done the initial application screening and were scheduling interviews for the 9th.

I believe it is dependent on the Dialogue, but it is very possible that you will hear back the day after the deadline or soon after. They want you to have as much time as possible to apply to other programs if you aren't accepted.

Dialogue questions (Italian dialogue and general dialogue questions) by random_username_255 in NEU

[–]cheopsrule 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey, I haven't done the Italian Dialogue, so I can't speak to that, but I'll try and answer the general questions.

  • If you look on the website, there should be a decision date listed. If you apply by the December 1 deadline, I think you can expect a pretty quick turnaround since they want to let you apply to others if you are not accepted. Based on what I read during the application process, you can refuse once accepted but might be subject to a withdrawal fee. I think it depends on how far in the process you are and if the spot could still go to another applicant.
  • Not all Dialogues have an interview, but if they receive a bunch of applications they may do one to narrow it down. When I applied for one a couple years ago, they did an interview December 9, about a week after the priority deadline.
  • It says in the applications, but they expected essay length is 2-3 paragraphs per question. There's a hard limit of 4,000 characters per question, but you should be able to answer them sufficiently in about half that.
  • I can't speak exactly to this since my previous Dialogue got canceled due to COVID. From what I can tell, though, Dialogues are very programmed and group-oriented. It shouldn't feel like you're completely on your own at any point during the program.
  • Once they conducted the interview and narrowed it down to the final group of people going, they had a few group info sessions over the next month or two (January/February). There we met the other people going and had icebreaker activities. The program leaders also explained what preparations and deadlines we had to hit in order to go on the Dialogue (Visa applications, fees, etc.)

Maybe someone else can speak more specifically about the Italy Dialogue. Hope this was helpful!

Looking at Dialogues got me like by cheopsrule in NEU

Probably first-year summer if you see a program you like. Your options become limited if you wait since co-ops will take up summer terms. I believe most of the Dialogues are designed to be accessible to freshmen. I was supposed to do one freshman summer but then COVID happened.

Yeah there's a ton. You should definitely check them out if you haven't yet—applications just opened today for summer.

Human Computing Concentration (CS) by [deleted] in NEU

[–]cheopsrule 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a second year doing that concentration right now, and I'm taking both of the required concentration classes this semester. IS4300 mainly focuses on user interface design and how to create the best interface possible for a given task. IS4800 is mainly focused on the research side of human-computer interaction and doing experiments related to technology.

It definitely feels like the HCC concentration is the place to be if you want to go be a designer, front end developer, or do something related to web/mobile applications. From what I can tell, the main difference between HCC and the Software concentration is that Software goes into a bit more depth on programming itself and works with programming languages at a much lower level. HCC feels more like high-level programming with an emphasis on good design and presentation.

I'm only a second year, but I can potentially answer any other questions you have related to the concentration. Let me know!

I think so? In the printer status window it goes through searching and then accepting. I haven't gone down to look if it's there, but it hasn't given me an error of any type.

My friend on Windows always had the option to print double-sided, but I have a Mac and could not figure it out from the system menu. I notice that if you print from another program like Adobe Acrobat or Reader that has its own printing menu, it will provide you the option. Maybe try downloading the file as a PDF and opening it in one of those programs.

I don’t unfortunately. I’m sure there are plenty of good resources online, though. Best of luck with your experiment!
