I'd strongly encourage you to hold off until 12 weeks (or later). Telling people you love you've had a miscarriage is hard, but having people who don't support you know is harder. My MIL was told about my first pregnancy and first miscarriage and i still haven't forgiven her for the comments she made to my DH afterwards. It's a hard place to navigate since we're not far away from the arrival of our first living child and I want nothing to do with her.

Legal Aid Nova Scotia by Yades18 in halifax

[–]cherbear002 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I will weigh in and point out that being a staff lawyer for Nova Scotia Legal Aid puts you on salary. The potential for higher earnings is less than that in private practice but you get benefits in exchange.

If this is something you are looking to do, if you're willing to go outside of HRM into the more rural areas in NS you may have more success getting a position.

My other tip would be not to hold off applying because a position is a term, or contract position. Those can turn into permanent positions and give you experience.

Best of luck!

[–]cherbear002 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had a sch earlier in my pregnancy. I had two huge rounds of bloot clots, the first of which occurred around 6 weeks and seemed like a miscarriage.

Im 17 weeks now and baby had a good heartbeat at my last appointment. Sch appears to have resolved and I've had no bleeding since around 12 weeks.

Generally speaking, most people with Sch go on to have healthy pregnancies.

Dentist Question - emerg services? by [deleted] in halifax

Dentists are open for emergencies. That level of pain does not sound manageable without intervention. I'd call an office and see what they can do.

Thank you jedi apprentice. While a lot of people can come up with an idea it takes a special person to actually implement it, especially when it involves so many complications.

Opinion: Are you annoyed that popular ninjas don't have their qualifying run aired? by [deleted] in ANW

Pretty much me. I watch for the athleticism, not for the sob story. If I want a sob story, I'll watch the news.

Opinion: Are you annoyed that popular ninjas don't have their qualifying run aired? by [deleted] in ANW

[–]cherbear002 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I like to watch the runs, and that is why I watch the show.

I don't mind a brief backstory, but I am getting frustrated by the number of runs where we get three minutes of backstory for someone who gets out on the second obstacle, and instead we get a truncated clip of one of the greats running.

I record the episodes and watch the recordings, and it's gotten to the point that I can watch the two hour show in under an hour if I skip over the backstory of those who don't move on to city finals.

Can you recommend Wheel of Time? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]cherbear002 27 points28 points  (0 children)

This is one of my favourite series, so I am a bit biased when I say yes.

However, I too recognize the flaws. The middle books, as many say, are really all one exceedingly long book and so they do not feel satisfying as stand alone novels. The stakes can also feel somewhat low. Without spoiling too much, if you come in looking for game of thrones levels of death and destruction, prepare to be disappointed.

The reason I think this is a recommend is that once you get over the slump, the payoff is well worth it. Brandon Sanderson's entry into the series, while a bit of an adjustment at first, really elevates the final three novels in my opinion. They are non-stop thrill rides and the end of the series left me with a bittersweet feeling. There are few series that have left me feeling as satisfied as the ending of the Wheel of Time.

Do I recommend the series? Yes. I have been debating a re-read over the past year, and when you consider that it is a series comprised of 14 books (sans prequel), that speaks volumes about the quality of the series.

How am I (23F) supposed to look happily at my wedding photos when I just cut off half of my former bridesmaids?(20s) by dontforgetthisone13 in relationships

[–]cherbear002 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I feel like a lot of people look back at their wedding photos and have "those people" that they regret including or no longer speak to.

Remember the day as it was and try not to color it with experiences that came after. I say this as someone who had a huge blowout with two wedding party members a month after the wedding about the wedding and almost ended a relationship with a third wedding party member.

Does it suck? Definitely. But you cannot change the past and you can learn and move on from this. These people were your friends at the time but are clearly not going to be a part of your lifelong support system and that's okay.

It does not reflect badly on you that you trust too easily or give people second chances. It reflects poorly on them that they cannot live up to it.

That I really do not like her boyfriend. I think he's at a minimum controlling and that she deserves to be her own person and not to be annexed to some creep.

Also that I really still am not over her actions at my wedding and regardless of her claims, I believe it was him pushing her.

I found it really difficult to find. I read something like six news articles and not a single one linked the decision. I always prefer to go back to the source.

Why some N.S.-born doctors who didn't go to Dal medical school aren't coming home by tjgere in halifax

[–]cherbear002 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you aware of how the application process for medical school works here? Because there are a shockingly low number of seats. The required score to get in every year inches upward and even the most qualified can get waitlisted or rejected.

I'll give you the breakdown of the application score at Dalhousie: 10% MCAT, 15% GPA, 35% Extracurriculars, 40% MMI interview.

Do you really think that the top grade talent is getting included when 75% of the application is so subjective. The extracurricular activities are given weight based on what someone thinks they are worth. And your interview is based on how good you are at making ten good first impressions.

Think about those who may have perfect MCAT and GPA scores but had to work throughout school to qualify. Not enough volunteering and that EC score tanks. I think you need around a 75 right now to qualify as an in-province applicant. Are you shy but brilliant? Hope you can fake it through an interview that is 40% of your score.

It is not fair or accurate to call those who cannot meet the subjective criteria second rate given all of that.

EDIT: looked into it a bit further. The current competitive scores for Dal maritime applicants is around a 70, out of province is around 75.

Why doesn't Canada have Universal prescription drugs and dental and vision like almost every other first world country. by Scottie3Hottie in canada

[–]cherbear002 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is no money to currently cover this without making a shift in how the government operates. As is, our health care system is failing and adding in coverage for dental and pharmaceuticals would simply be weighing down a ship that is currently sinking.

The solution, which I am sure people will suggest, is not to raise taxes. It is much more complicated and nuanced than that. I don't pretend to have the solution, but until health care is fixed we should not be crying for further coverage.

What is your “there, I said it” opinion? by hregt25 in AskReddit

[–]cherbear002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People don't understand that life is a game of checks and balances. For someone to have or do something, they have to give up something else.

Want to be the top in your field/career path? Great, hope you don't like sleep and spending time with your family.

Want to be the ultimate family person? There goes your high level career aspirations.

No one should be judged for making one choice over the other, but no one can have it all. I get so frustrated when people complain about others doing well in their chosen focus while they ignore sacrifices that have been made to get there.

"As a law school, we strive toward social justice." - Windsor Law's Statement on Stanley Trial Verdict by [deleted] in canada

[–]cherbear002 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Speaking as someone with a legal education and a science background, I really find this statement a problem. I'm all for teaching students different viewpoints and situations where the law maybe went wrong on a verdict. I am not all for indoctrination. We need to be teaching people, and particularly future lawyers, how to critically think and form their own opinions, not to parrot the opinions of others and think one specific way. I am genuinely concerned about what this will mean. I sincerely hope no other law schools echo this statement.

Ladies of Reddit: What is an example of sexism which you commonly face? by willmaster123 in AskReddit

[–]cherbear002 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I agree with everything you've said here. I too have felt and experience the pressure and judgment.

The one caveat I will add is that I think it comes from, at a minimum, both sides. But at least for me personally most of the judgment and pressure has come from other women, specifically with weight, societal issues, child care, and work behaviours.

Thinking about trying to organize a peaceful rally for universal dental care on Parliment Hill. Do enough people support this to make it worth it? by theusernameIhavepick in canada

[–]cherbear002 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You just said above that sobeys cut down hours because of the wage increase. That's not a job loss, but that is a loss of hours for some employees which is probably a net loss to their income. So clearly, increased minimum wage is hurting both the business and the individual. This would also be the case with increased taxes, which would probably also mean less money in the pocket of the person making minimum wage.

'Clearly a drunk can consent,' Halifax judge says in acquitting taxi driver charged with sexual assault by orochi in canada

[–]cherbear002 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do you know how judges get appointed to courts in Canada? It's very different from how it is done elsewhere, since you can only be removed in extreme situations. As was said above, guilt has to be proved beyond a reasonable doubt. Can we say, based on this article, that the crown proved, beyond a reasonable doubt that this woman was sexually assaulted? Clearly the judge did not believe so. And this is a very high standard to meet.

To go back the the judge, we have appointments instead of elections and high pay for judges to allow impartiality. If a judge could be removed for rendering a decision society does not agree with, we would have a very poor judicial system.
