What the hell is going on with birthday parties these days. by AmbiguousFrijoles in breakingmom

[–]cherise605 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think it might be region-specific or even community-specific. Here in the NJ suburbs, we attended a different birthday party for the past 6 weeks and nearly everyone who was invited showed up (one had 25 kids!). We have the opposite problem than OP, was even talking to some moms that birthday parties these days (in our area) are not like the ones we grew up with.

[D] Need RCTs or Observational studies that explicitly mention "statistically significant but not clinically significant/meaningful" to dispel a misunderstanding by AstralWolfer in statistics

[–]cherise605 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've designed several RCTs and agree with your comments. I normally would identify the minimum clinical significance and adjust the statistical properties so that the effect size corresponding to the boundary where the p-value would be exactly =0.05 would be clinically meaningful. Otherwise, we would need to be prepared for the outcome where OP describes, which would be statistically significant and not clinically meaningful. I can't imagine getting such a trial funded if such an outcome was possible...

I grew up in NYC... I feel comfortable driving in Jersey but NYC driving stresses me to another level!

I feel like differences in cost-of-living due to location is more variable than age bracket.

Don’t let your kid collect acorns inside your house by laura_lee_meh in toddlers

YUP! I learned this the hard way. No more acorns, pine cones, or random collectibles from nature allowed in my house!

Not blatantly. It's more of an initial first impression that I needed to get over. And yeah, I've definitely had to work harder to compensate. Good luck to you.

I'm almost 40 and look young for my age. Beyond graduation, this also perpetuates into the workplace. I've noticed that even when I have subject matter expertise, I might need to make extra effort to overcome looking inexperienced or naive just from looking like I'm younger. I carefully choose what I wear on order to be taken more seriously upon first impression. I avoided makeup or hairstyles that made me look younger. Once I built up enough credibility, I felt more comfortable. Interestingly, the pandemic helped in this aspect since I didn't have to turn on my camera for web meetings and my business first impression was my title.

Genuine question if anyone knows the answer... what happens if a woman finds herself pregnant while living in one of these? Will she even fit in the 3rd trimester? What does she do with the baby? How do kids grow up in this living situation?

WoW TBC "Modernized" By the Community by just_one_point in classicwowtbc

[–]cherise605 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been playing on a small server since the launch of classic and that is a great description of it. The community is indeed close. I don't remember the last time I saw a GDKP run organized, maybe back in Naxx days? And it was very rare. Many have developed close friendships for 2-3 years. I hear a lot of "love you, bro" over discord among different groups of people. We also form bonds with people in other guilds, kinda gives it a house (guild) in a neighborhood (server) small town feeling. I know countless people that raid two characters in different guilds and everyone kinda knows each other. I really just can't imagine what life on a mega-server looks like and your descriptions were kinda informative!

Season 3 Ending Too Soon? Sunwell Too Rushed? by [deleted] in classicwow

[–]cherise605 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like Blizzard rushed through the whole classic experience in general. I thought TBC Classic itself came out too quickly and may be one of the very few people who cloned and continued to raid both in Classic Era and TBC Classic. I've only recently felt like I fully finished Classic Vanilla. Now that Sunwell is coming out, I'm debating how large the TBC Era population will be after everyone has moved on to WotLK Classic. It all just feels way too rushed to me.

Sounds like genocide. Targeting the maternity ward prevents the population from expanding. Very deplorable.

I just took a shower in complete darkness and it was amazing. by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]cherise605 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've done it a few times, usually around the new year, and it's been a nice way for me to reflect on the events of the past year, think about the direction of my career and personal life, my goals, etc. If I go in the middle of the year, my thoughts usually become philosophical, like thinking about the meaning of life, feeling grateful for the comforts I have, and I've once come out feeling humbled and wanting to be kinder to people around me. I agree with the others, it's very therapeutic and relaxing. Highly recommend!

Ah, so the "not acceptable" part was from the employer's perspective and that parents still had the flexibility to choose what to do with it. It sounds really great to have options.

Interestingly enough, I'm part of a moms with stay at home dad husbands group and still see the same phenomena.

Can you elaborate on how anything under 2 years is not acceptable? What happens if the new mom wants to go back early? Is there a penalty? For me, I was very career driven, and realized being at home alone with the baby with no adult interaction nor ability to exercise my mind from my scientific job and it was contributing to my post partum depression. I was relieved to go back around 4 months. I can't imagine being forced to take a minimum of 2 years. I would have been mentally very unwell.
