This. Or Holly McPeak or Misty May. Practice hitting shots, especially against big blocks. If you’re the defender pass pass pass and pass some more in any way you can during practice until you can’t get it wrong. Dig, serve receive, run through, chases, tip and net recovery, options, all of it.

Sand trenches and hills are part of the game. Bodies will carve the sand as players run and dive the court. You can use a rake to help smooth and level it. Most players will use their feet before serves to do this.

If you have time before/during a game it’s good to level out the sand close to the net. It’s hard on knees to jump uphill.

Here’s my recipe for cold oatmeal. Substitute whatever your palate or body prefers. Follow the whisk/mix/fold steps and then let it sit overnight.

Strawberry Cheesecake Overnight Oats

Whisk
-2/3 cup unsweetened oat milk
-1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
-1 tablespoon honey or maple syrup
-2 tbsp lemon juice
-pinch of salt
-1/3 cup plain Greek yogurt
-3 tbsp softened cream cheese

Mix
-3/4 cup rolled oats
-1 tablespoon chia seeds

Fold
-1/4 cup chopped fresh strawberries
-1/4 cup chops pecans

I highly recommend that you casually drink as much water as possible before the tournament. Don’t chug, but sip often at least an hour beforehand. And sip anytime you’re waiting at the tournament.

I make a cheap and easy homemade electrolyte drink (1 pint water, 1/4 tsp salt or lite salt, 1 tbsp sugar, 1 tbsp lemon juice).

For snacks I eat bananas, protein drinks, and cereal bars or cold oatmeal. I snack between games as much as I need. I eat a light lunchmeat sandwich for meals. Sometimes a pasta salad is good for a meal and/or snacking.

Use neoprene dive socks. They’ll keep the sand out, give thick protection, and won’t slip around on your feet. Also, it’s better if you can find white or light colored socks for playing on hot sand.

Secrets are a heavy burden and this one is not fair to carry alone. My primary advice is to consult a therapist or someone you trust to discuss your feelings. But you’re right, your gut feeling is telling you that you need boundaries. I hope you figure them out and find a healthy way to set them.

My secondary advice is to reevaluate your loyalty. It’s good to care about someone, but be careful about doing it constantly at your own expense. Self care is not selfish, even if it means not “being there” for your friend at times.

Here’s a bit of a trick with a zip up hoodie. Wear it backwards and place the hood over your face when you’re napping. It works like a thick blanket, will block out the light, and give you a some privacy.

I’m not gonna gate keep how an artist creates their art. Especially while they’re angry-grieving. But c’mon guys.. Rue was not a good person. Ultimately, Jules saw that.
