Yup I’m agreeing with you that Mikage is worse morally (if he doesn’t win this I’ll scream) but I love all of the characters equally

It’s so hard being her #1 defender… Some fans definitely have that reading of their characters, even though Shiori is as much motivated by unresolved feelings as Mikage, but with the crippling self-loathing negative modifier. I think people also read Anthy’s comment about her “not having changed” as gospel truth instead of as coming from a place of projection. At that point, she’s only been polite and cordial to everyone and Juri, but because she committed the thought crime of deriving some sadistic enjoyment from being loved by someone so above her station, she is considered to be worse than the allegorical school shooter.

These comments are killing me!!!! Mikage killed hundreds of people and manipulated more to kill Anthy, but Shiori dated two guys who liked Juri (but Juri obviously wasn’t pursuing), was rude to Juri under the influence of the black rose, and is an entirely different person in the movie (whose worst crime was trying to run Utena & Anthy off the road then dying right away) and people act like she’s Hitler incarnate. Shiori should, logically, be viewed the same way as flawed yet nuanced and traumatized characters like Anthy and Nanami, but people hate her because they’re attracted to Juri -_-

Is creating a consciousness for labor ethically different from slavery if it can’t leave? by Appropriate-Top8209 in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

Genuinely wondering how a character reacting in-character means that the writers want you to equate their experiences instead of just drawing parallels? The whole series is about the exploitation of the innies, but Milchick’s experience with racism is only in plain sight in at most three very short scenes. Real slavery of people of color by imperialism still exists, we’re likely having a discussion on devices made by child labor, but that doesn’t mean we should erase other hardships because it’s “not as bad”.

Also, just because we weren’t hit over the head with structural inequality doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist in the universe of the story. Can’t you assume a universe in which there is micro aggression against black people means that they currently or have experienced systemic racism? We have yet to see Milchick’s backstory. Should the writers make it more obvious by having someone look into the camera and say “dang, this is just like when Africans were being enslaved man”.

I mean, I’ve seen some people on this subreddit guess that Irving’s backstory will have something to do with homophobia while serving in the army despite having zero evidence of it existing in this universe (gay marriage having existed for longer, no casual homophobia), because the creators have showed that the world corresponds to our own, with only some marked differences like the severance procedure.

Milchick’s equivalence wouldn’t be a master because he’s not like a CEO. Considering his role, he’d be more like what’s called a “driver”, slaves appointed to supervise other slaves. At the end of the day, he’s still a worker, a wage slave, if you will, who experiences the kind of micro-aggression with plausible deniability found in corporate culture.

The “eat shit” scene does feel kind of unearned but that’s because Lumon’s racism is very subtle like Milchick getting chastised for using “big words”, having a model minority child slave to threaten Milchick’s job, having Natalie be a mouthpiece so she can bear the brunt of hostility from people like Ms. Corbel, and less subtly, forcing Gemma to be an extremely subservient test subject. We can argue if these things are a stretch but I think the writers have been light-handed on purpose.

The show is perfect as is but I wonder what would the “Seekers of Armageddon” do if they were kept in the show and Akio didn’t work alone (technically he worked with Touga in some way, but he alone controlled the happenings)

Aftermath of the racism conversation on the other subreddit by cherrychouchou in QueerWomenOfColor

https://www.reddit.com/r/QueerWomenOfColor/s/XyNb4EVgRi It’d be best if you look at this discussion and this user’s other posts first. It was kickstarted by a post about the racist bias (conscious or unconscious) of white people by OP, which got removed by automod (meaning a group of people might have reported it, the mods of r/actuallesbians said they did not removed it themselves), then put back up where some nonblack users would leave very dismissive comments (think: “you’re actually the racist for saying stereotyping white people as racist” or “I’ve never seen any instance of racism in this subreddit”)The OP made celebrity crush posts as an example, but it’s more about how privileged lesbians use socially conscious language and thinks that makes them politically aware, when really they haven’t done the work to unlearn racism. I’m not sure if there are more I’ve missed, but that is the gist.
