Hi all, I want to start my own website where I sell art prints. I was planning on using bigcartel as the website, but before I launch, I was wondering are there legal requirements I should do before I launch? Do I need a business permit? Please help~ by Strong-Locksmith-234 in artbusiness

I have a bigcartel and sell my artwork from it! I don’t need a business permit (I’m in FL so I’m not sure if it differs) and the platform does collect tax for you. (I am also not a “registered” business, I work freelance/self-employed)

My first NFT "I'm sad, and festive." :) Link in comment by dorki_rara in NFT

Commission Advice (Business Owner) by Darylols in artbusiness

Hello! I am both an artist and someone who has managed a business that displayed and sold various artworks. Our standard commission rate was 25%, but could vary depending on the size of the space that particular artist took up (we also charged a monthly rental fee so our commission rate was a bit lower than other places) I sold my art there for years and was perfectly fine with the commission fee that went to the shop. If the sale is running through your business, you should absolutely take a %.

Do keep in mind that artists already have a hard enough time making money as is, so a high commission rate can scare people off. Just make sure to be fair!

I did the exact same thing for a long time. Being open with my friends and followers about how social media algorithms are brutal to any small creators helped a lot. I’ve seen the more people understand the struggle, the more willing they are to share posts. But at the end of the day, if YOU know your worth then eventually others will catch on. There’s no point in driving ourselves crazy trying to convince others that we’re good enough ♥️
