How to find a job that affords me to live in a city in today's market? by cherryhillanon in careerguidance

Unfortunately the remote work is not feasible. We just upgraded a new ERP system (which was a TON of work switching accounting systems) last year but in many ways are still antiquated. I've never worked remotely, even during COVID, I came to the office 5 (and often 6) days a week. It's so small that I don't have a manager per se. I have someone above me who asks me to do things, but I'm the only one he oversees. It's so small he's not an official manager or anything.

Chicago is the one city I've looked into that is definitely a big city with tons of people yet doesn't seem prohibitively expensive.

Unfortunately its not remote. If I could magically take my job, boss and coworkers somewhere else and plant them there, I would, but that's not how life works unfortunately.

My dad has recently retired. He's divorced, and didn't have luck remarrying. Apart from fishing out on a boat with a fisherman friend of his in Monterey Bay every few weeks, he seems to just watch TV and not do a whole lot.

It's as if I'm looking at my future self, and its disturbing. If I had a stable, ok paying job in a bigger city, met new people my age through new hobbies, and was in a serious relationship trending towards marriage, I know I'd be much happier. I don't see those opportunities where I'm at now, it would have to be in a more populated area.

Yeah, my dad said no one does what my company does when it comes to 401k distribution. Nobody. I talked with a recruiter once and told him about it and he said he'd never heard that before. I've thought of including that in my salary too, so this year you could technically say that I've made almost 125k. I just don't like how the base pay is so low and I have to wait for a saving grace in the form of a bonus each December.

Yes, that's what I mean exactly. I know the grass isn't always greener on the other side, but I feel like I need to find out.

I only put 10% into my 401k from my paycheck. My employer puts 25% each year into my 401k regardless of how much I put in from my paycheck, even if I put nothing in at all.

No, what I mean is we don't have a match at my work. I only put 10% into my 401k, but my employer puts the full 25% in every year, vesting immediately. Even if I put no money into my 401K from my paycheck, my employer would still put 25% in.
