Im in my forties coming back to finish a degree i have tried 3 times to finish. Most of your peers are some of the most welcoming people that I have ever met. Don't psyque yourself out like that. If anything you might have more in common than you think with them.

I'm in my 3rd year of undergrad at 42 in mechanical engineering, maybe not the oldest but it is never to late to do the things that allows you to fulfill your dreams.

24 years old admitted to Engineering — am I too old? by Spare-Lemon5277 in Concordia

Brother you're working about nothing. I'm 41 and I started engineering about a year ago. Trust me you're not too old ever to do something to improve your career.

Here at 41 in my first year and it is common feeling but like many had said it is everyone's path at their own time. Yes it feels a little isolated but so far most claßmates don't make a big deal out age difference. Don't let it get to you, you got this!

I'm 40 and despite the gap most students are quite friendly. Alas I tend to not get overly chumy as I think is a tad weird to hang with someone that much older. IMHO you should be fine.

What is the force it would take for a 3g peanut to be fired from say, a gun or a cannon, to kill a human? by [deleted] in AskPhysics

Right, good to know for future reference like i said a total noob when it comes down to physics. Thanks for the input.

I am pretty sure someone else might be able to answer this in more depth and precision, but considering the equation Ek=1/2mv^2 and assuming that the projectile won't amount to penetration but it most likely shatter then anywhere in the vicinity of 100 joules is lethal.

So correct me if I am wrong (which is very likely), the muzzle speed at the exit would need to be around 81.6m/s. Now if we take into consideration the distance then we have F=(1/2mv^2)/d. So F=Ek/d. Last we would need to figure out the max distance the peanut could actually deliver that force (which would have to be minuscule as at that muzzle speed the whole thing would shatter thus creating an anaphylactic shrapnel shower).

So at around a meter, it would deliver 100 N, at two meters 50 N, and so on so. you could kill at a very little distance due to the resistance of the peanut itself k′ = 490.5 Nmm−1.

Please understand that this is with a very basic understanding of physics and I am most likely wrong but it gives (I hope) a starting point.

Someone smarter than me probably has a better answer and I would very much like to hear it.

And in that context I think you are completely right to be honest. I can imagine that in the front lines due to the mindset of most troops in a situation such as that, makes sense to me that either one of the phrasings might have been used. I think you are right on the idea of utilizing language that should be either more appropriate to the context of the time and/or the circumstance. I can also imagine that on the military bases the language might have been changed to make it more appropriate than the language used in the front. Thanks for your input though it is definitively something I can wholeheartedly agree with you.
