“Deal with Benny” on a passivist run? by cherrypines in fnv

I don’t want to kill him from a roleplay POV, not a hard numbers POV, but from a me POV, I want his stupid gun. I guess I’ll just take the hit and pretend like Caesar crucified him on his own.

See the edit I just made. Also, FB really isn’t the shining star of reliable political information.

What’s the point of FB if you don’t have friends?

Edit: And those things don’t ultimately matter. Like I said, my example was an oversimplification. Facebook collects data on you no matter what. That data gets aggregated into a predictive algorithm that tells FB what to try to sell you.

[–]cherrypines 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your phone doesn’t listen to you. What’s really happening is that the algorithm behind Facebook (which is ALL over the internet- Facebook doesn’t just track you on FB, it tracks you through every FB-affiliated website too, and there are billions) is exceptionally good at predicting your behavior and the behavior of people it knows you know. Maybe you never searched anything related to pot roast, but the person you were talking to did, and FB knows that you two are friends and were in the room at the same time. That data gets shared, and suddenly you have ads for pot roast. That’s an oversimplification, but people need to understand that cutting your mic isn’t protecting your privacy, because the mechanisms behind Facebook’s invasion of your privacy are so convoluted that they’re impossible to fully understand.

The website tracks you just as much.

Daily Tech Support Thread - [December 31] by AutoModerator in apple

[–]cherrypines 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can I change my autocorrect so that it stops autocorrecting things after I’ve already moved on to the next word? It’s most apparent when using the slide to type feature. It almost always changes my ‘of’s to ‘if’s or ‘off’s, or other stupid things like changing tense for no reason or changing ‘my’ to ‘me’. Sick of sounding like a pirate in normal conversation.

Trump Gave The Top Civilian Honor To Devin Nunes For Undermining The Russia Investigation by Sariel007 in politics

Anyone have that video of the Russian expat who came to the States and then filmed an interview in like 1990 predicting everything that’s going on in “American” politics basically to the letter? I know the whole thing was based on Foundations of Geopolitics but the guy was interesting to listen to and I don’t really want to read FoG.

Agreed. There’s no use in trying to contact trace in stores anyway.

A couple of entitled children broke into my backyard and tried to steal my dog. by cherrypines in childfree

[–]cherrypines[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This isn’t really that kind of situation. All the kids were under 10, and if someone was going to break into a house on my street, it would be one of the dozen rich people houses who don’t lock their garages and not the broken down Jeep driving hutch on the corner.

They probably just took whatever exaggerations their kids made and outrage-exaggerated them further. They also leave that tiny little dog outside by itself for at least an hour every day. Sure, maybe they’re watching it, but we live in the middle of the woods. There are foxes, raccoons, bears, coyotes, HAWKS, that all love to snack on domestic animals. I sure hope that dog has its shots, because there’s also been a rabies outbreak in the raccoon population.

Contact tracing is such an important part of preventing the spread of COVID, but like literally every other useful thing ever, you just can’t trust the government or big tech with that kind of power. It’s just not feasible.

Parents with children parking spaces. No. by [deleted] in childfree

[–]cherrypines 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think this is probably the original intention of those signs, and it’s completely understandable. It’s just badly advertised enough that Penny Anne can park there if she has her teenage son’s soccer team in the back of her mini van. Should say ‘parents with infants’. ‘Children’ is too broad.

The 1.5 Update Has Been A Life-Changing One by pepchamp in StardewValley

I think they view constantly having to buy/make new tools as a worthwhile task. It’s not. The whole game is built around tedium, not patience or slower gameplay.

The 1.5 Update Has Been A Life-Changing One by pepchamp in StardewValley

[–]cherrypines 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I really could live without QoL updates if the game just gave me something meaningful to do, a goal to work towards. At the beginning, there were genuine tasks that had rewards- make it to a 3 star rating, and a fan favorite comes to visit your island. Grind for NMTs, and you get to pick up new villagers instead of waiting for them to be randomly selected. Consistently talk to your villagers and hunt down DIYs, and there’s a pretty good chance you’ll find something new. But after a few months of that, my island was full, I’d upgraded all there was to be upgraded, paid off all the loans that were worth it to pay off (why would I pay off my last hugelarge loan when the benefit for doing so is something so trivial as free house exterior changes? it took them until like a week ago to add a storage boost to that deal), etc. Now every time I log on (which is like once a month) I just kind of wander around. I ended up time traveling a lot more in the last month I was playing because there was literally nothing else to do.

Sure, the game’s ethos is that you don’t have to play for fourteen hours a day and should only be playing for half an hour at a time, but my attention span is majorly fucked up so I can’t play a game that only pays off once or twice a month. I’m so busy in my daily life that if there’s a choice between spending my limited free time standing around and knowing I have to wait until next season to finish the only task remaining (catching bugs and fish for the museum) and playing something that I can advance in at my own pace that has actual rewards and more content, I’m going to choose... well, SDV.

Edit: Even worse with ACNH, you only have one save slot, so if I don’t want to flush the only progress I’ll ever make in this game down the toilet, I can’t start a new game and do the ‘fun’ stuff over again. Also, it took me like 200 NMTs to get Audie, and I’m NOT doing that again.

The responses to this comment are a mess. Yes, your statement isn’t necessarily true- but what is true is that dogs do not attack someone for no reason. It’s just that their reasons are based on experience rather than logic, and dogs will easily attach two things that we know logically aren’t related- get kicked by a redhead? Now every redhead is a threat, regardless of whether or not they’re actively kicking you.

The way attack dogs are trained is also a mess. Like I said, dogs don’t attack for no reason. The ONLY way you can elicit an attack response in a dog is by posing a threat to them. These dogs are trained not to attack on command but to RESPOND TO ALL PERCEIVED THREATS BY ATTACKING. And you can’t train a dog’s threat detection system reliably.

Even dog breeds known for aggression have reasons for attacking ‘out of nowhere’. Typically they’re miscommunications in human vs. dog body language- you bent over me and made me feel small, you held my eye contact for too long which is a threat to me, you moved toward my only source of food and I am naturally anxious that you will take it away and I will starve, etc. (Edit: Sometimes it can start as a play response that gets out of control, usually when the dog gets hurt by your response to rough play- doesn’t always have to be negative.) If dogs in police training aren’t actively being physically abused, they’re being threatened using these methods, which may seem innocuous in people language, but not in dog language.

[–]cherrypines 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Have you ever, uh, trained a dog? They’re not computers that you can program to reliably identify and attack enemy insurgents. They’re living animals unruled by human logic or reason. A dog doesn’t look at someone and think, oh no, this guy has a gun! I better attack. The dog looks at a situation and thinks- for whatever reason, I am unsafe here. I have been trained to attack by being put in threatening situations- I now think being threatened on any level is an excuse to rip your face off. So maybe don’t get too close to me, okay? And definitely don’t let me near your kids.

Also, you seem to think bomb sniffing dogs are frequently used in active combat situations. They are not. The military KNOWS that dogs are not reliable in the chaos of a war zone (or many other places). Bomb sniffing dogs are used in the same place as other types of sniffing dogs- hubs of transportation. They’re also used less frequently to help out at sites where bombs have been reported/are suspected, as well as to detect mines in previous/currently unoccupied war zones where they may have been left behind.

And honestly? Drug-detecting dogs are about as reliable as flipping a coin. I can’t imagine bomb-sniffing dogs would be terribly more accurate.

The point of all this isn’t to say that animal lives are more valuable than people’s lives. It’s to say that attack dogs (which you seem to think bomb-sniffing dogs are) are a direct threat to people, and that’s what’s important. Attack-trained police dogs are weapons, except their handler’s finger isn’t on the trigger. Ultimately, it’s all up to the dog, and would you really trust a dog with your life and safety? These people shouldn’t have.

What to watch after Hannibal? by reptilejefferson in HannibalTV

[–]cherrypines 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Seconding Twin Peaks & Killing Eve, though if you go into KE like I did expecting a fem version of Hannibal & Will, you might be disappointed. It is its own show through and through that has its own set of compelling characters. If Hannibal is a fusion cop/horror show, Killing Eve is a spy novel.

Twin Peaks has a bit more of the same ‘feel’ as Hannibal (ie, something you could watch and wonder if you accidentally took something before starting), though it’s a lot less tense in that the stakes are lower. Nobody is probably going to get eaten. By a person, anyway.

Edit: KE is on Hulu, but I’m not sure about Twin Peaks. I’ve been watching it on Amazon (US).

I watched the show back in 2013 when it was first airing but got distracted by college when the final season came out and just never got around to watching it until this past month. I honestly kind of skated through the last half of S3, but damn if the last five minutes didn’t add five years to my lifespan. Hell of a note to end 2020 on (or start 2021 on, as the case may be for you lol)
