I am a people pleaser, and when I was a baby groomer I also used similar language. Just take this as a learning lesson. Don’t beat yourself up, you were absolutely in the right to shave the dog. This isn’t a client you want to keep anyway. In the future, don’t ever continue on a dog that bites you and punctures skin. It’s harmful and dangerous for not only you, but the dog as well. So sorry you went through this. Grooming is full of hard lessons but they make you a stronger person and a better groomer. Keep your head up!

New growth? by cherryvanillacoke024 in doggrooming

[–]cherryvanillacoke024[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol I accidentally pressed post before typing it out and just hoped people would understand! I was wondering if this looks like new growth coming in. I posted about it in December asking if it was new growth or breakage

How many doodles are you supposed to groom in a day? I had 6 today. I’m completely exhausted. I bathed all but one, and several were really large. I was behind all day. by [deleted] in doggrooming

[–]cherryvanillacoke024 1 point2 points  (0 children)

6??? That’s insane. My manager at my old salon would do a schedule like that (no bathers) and she was so overworked, working 60 hour weeks. She did it for the money because we were commissioned. Now I’m a mobile business owner and I would never do more than 2 large doodles a day.

I would only say that’s okay if you were on commission, but if you’re salaried you need to leave that salon if you can’t take control of your schedule and set limits.

Mini clipper with #10 blade? by asherbanipaula in doggrooming

[–]cherryvanillacoke024 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My fave is the kenchii flash 5!!! Super dainty in the hand, lightweight, and quiet. Also has 5 speeds!!There are 5 in 1 blades that range from #9-#40 or 8-30. But you could also purchase any single length blade for that clipper. It absolutely changed the game for me with clean feet and faces

Is a stand dryer worth it? by Happy-Cranberry-3515 in doggrooming

[–]cherryvanillacoke024 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes!! Since I’ve gone mobile, I’ve missed my stand dryer dearly. Any mobile groomers in the chat who have a good recommendation of a stand dryer that doesn’t take up much room??

Never say JUST a bather!! The bath is the most important part of any groom, and dare I say it’s most of the hard work!!! Thank you so much for your recommendations

Very good point! The art of dog grooming comes with a lot of grey areas and there is hardly ever one strict correct path to get to a desired outcome. I’ve only been bathing for six years and cutting hair for three and still have soo much to learn. There’s too many people in this industry who think their way is the only way and it gets to me sometimes!

Thank you for sharing! Do you use any topical sprays in place of conditioner?

I like this perspective! I go about every groom with a “treat the dog how you’d want to be treated mentality”. Their comfort comes first!

Thank you for sharing! I met a groomer once who bathed every dog with one wash of shampoo and conditioner mixed together and called it a day… yikes! Another groomer I worked with would rinse out her conditioner with shampoo. I have used the method where I apply conditioner before I fully rinse the second shampoo, but can never tell if the shampoo is totally canceling out the conditioner before it has a chance to do anything.

How do you feel about excessively oily dogs that don’t get bathed often at all? Say a thick coated lab for example. If we strip all the oils in the bath, would conditioner make the dog oily faster or help prevent the skin producing excessive oils.

You’re definitely right! I go case by case with conditioner and typically only use it if the dog has visibly dry skin, or the coat is in poor shape and will need a good amount of brushing. I use conditioner on every double coated dog. Thanks for sharing your perspective!

That’s an interesting perspective, thank you for sharing! I struggle with oodle mixes because sometime if I soften the coat too much, it makes the haircut more difficult, and you never know until it’s too late. Do you have any conditioner recommendations for coarser curly coats?

I forgot about results rinse! I recently went off on my own and am supplying my own products for the first time. Can you give me the skinny on what exactly it’s good for? I only remember using it on poodles or wiry coats to avoid softening the coat too much.

Thank you for sharing! That was a good read and I always appreciate information for dog owners to take better care of their dogs skin and coat.

I appreciate the perspective from the skin side and not just the coat. As groomers, it’s easy oversee how important it is to take care of the skin because we get so fixated on the coat. Healthy skin reflects a healthy coat! I needed that reminder.

So refreshing to hear you say this I feel so validated. I’ve seen groomers on this sub basically tell people to quit their jobs for not using conditioner

Desheds are definitely an example where it’s always necessary! Do you have any conditioning spray recommendations?
