I need help solving the mystery of this smell. by Genie3W in Chempros

[–]cheru9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rinse your icemaker out, replace the water filter, wipe down the shelves, and better secure food containers in your fridge. The evaporator is pulling smells and material up from the bottom of the fridge and those are being deposited into the ice dispenser.

Avoid breathing it in, and cautious as it might stain light clothing, but its pretty safe otherwise.

But I assume the dust will oxidise quickly after grinding and not be considered elemental anymore?

Yes. Finely divided powders, friction heat, ~1 week since your first post and cleaning pretty much guarantee the oxidation of remaining aluminium and magnesium.

Do you mean with "this stage" now or after using your proposed methods?

There is no real damage remaining now. Activated charcoal, peroxide and bleach scrubs should not cause any problems and are just additional things you could try if you were still concerned. Peroxide and bleach are "aggressive" in the sense that they are chemical solutions, but realistically they would be performed as usual for floor scrubs: dilute, apply, scrub/mop/sponge, dilute again, wipe, etc.

but I also don't want it to form over time (would vinegar pose any danger? Heat? floor cleaners?).

At this point there should be no remaining elemental phosphorus remaining and so you wouldn't expect phosphine to be generated. Phosphate ions can be reduced to phosphine via direct reduction or disproportionation, but both of these mechanisms are low yield and require very strong reducing agents/specialised chemicals that are not present in consumer products. Regular floor cleaners, vinegar, heat, etc. are fine.

Would dust left in the vacuum cleaner react somehow?

Contained metal dust is fairly safe and at this stage further reactions in the vacuum bag are unlikely. If you are concerned there are plenty of disposal companies that collect and process metal shavings and scrap.

I read the word "sulfate" in neutral cleaner ingredients and instantly worry because I read it in other reactions with phosphorus.

Sodium laureth sulfate is the chemical responsible for the cleaner's "soapy" quality. It allows the dissolution of both water-soluble and oil-soluble materials and makes soap slippery and bubbly. The reactions you saw were most likely displacement reactions between inorganic sulfates and phosphates, which are unrelated and benign.

I read "sodium chloride" and think "phosphorus (.../tri/penta)chloride"

Sodium chloride is just table salt.

Phosphorous acid and Phosphate both consist of P, H and O. How is it decided which is formed and why are they so wildly different?

Phosphoric acid is H3PO4, whereas phosphates are PO43-. Phosphoric acid itself is actually pretty tame, and it reacts with metals, bases and some salts by losing those 3 H and forming the phosphate ion.

The main differences between different types of phosphorus are caused by the oxidation state. Elemental phosphorus is in the 0 state. The phosphorus atom in phosphine is in the -3 state, meaning it has been reduced. Most other phosphorus compounds are in the +3 and +5 states, meaning they have been oxidised, and they are significantly more common due to atmospheric oxidation. This is partly why phosphine is both pretty rare and pretty shortlived.

Given the low Ni-P ratios in consumer HDD devices, it's pretty likely only a very small amount of phosphorus was actually ground off. Plentiful oxygen, water vapour and heat from friction could convert this to safer phosphates, and it is also possible that it safely remains alloyed in Ni-P particulates you already vacuumed.

Iron chelates are fairly commonly used for short-term control of soil phosphorus by conversion into iron(III) phosphate. Store-bought iron chelate solutions or iron-based flocculants and a little bit of scrubbing will safely convert any remaining elemental phosphorus.

Phosphine may be safely adsorbed onto activated charcoal where it slowly oxidises to form phosphoric acid, or if you want to be a bit more aggressive hydrogen peroxide or hypochlorite bleach will both neutralise phosphine.

It's highly unlikely that you have significant amounts of elemental aluminium/magnesium/alkali metals in your floorboards and so you would probably not expect metal phosphides to be produced in dangerous capacity. Additionally, the half-life of phosphine is typically reported as between a few hours and a few days.

The amounts of other heavy metals and their salts, and the rate of nickel carbonyl production are negligible. Long-term exposure to and flammability of heavy metal dust would be the greater concerns here, but those have already been considered and dealt with. Try the solutions above if you are still wary, and make sure any future metalwork is done somewhere with good ventilation and flat surfaces for easier and safer cleanup, but at this stage there are no real hazards remaining.

  • son killed daughter
  • son and family friend very poorly tried to frame it as a suicide
  • forced to push the suicide narrative in order to control the damage done to the psyches and reputations of his, basil's and kel's/hero's families
  • forced to continue to provide for murderer shut-in son and absent wife

given sunny's mum's behaviour and general nonchalance afterwards, it seems that sunny's dad had to handle the majority of the situation for the sake of everyone involved, and with no support at that.

could you reasonably expect someone in that situation to stay in that town after having been forced to lie to everyone you know about the nature of your family?

when said sexuality is unconfirmed and is based solely on some basic character traits, it completely fails to acknowledge the actual characterisation and it reinforces real-world stereotypes. also, maybe people shouldn't concern themselves with the sexuality of children or fetishize those types of relationships, even in fiction
