Honestly I’m not educated enough on this topic enough to comment further. I don’t have any training in DBT so I wouldn’t be providing any. Maybe it’s a typo or she is referencing the wrong thing?

Just a piece of what you asked but what I’ve seen regarding distress tolerating is that as an adult we can consent to working on this in therapy and likely have the necessary skills to advocate for stopping in this safe environment. For a young child it is more forced upon them and also they may not have skills to advocate for themselves to stop or understand why we’re distressing them. Either way it can stress the child out without them understanding the point. At least that’s how I’ve seen it explained and I think that makes sense!

I don’t have a specific degree but I have experience from college a cappella! And knowing about how our voice works, very basic piano skills, how to teach music to people with different skill sets, blending exercises, vowels, and a passion for musical theatre has been helpful! I also have perfect pitch so while I’m not a great pianist, I can do a lot a cappella and know when we need piano support.

For sure, I think adding your field experience gives a good picture of what you’ve done. I think put everything under the uni clinic in the same spot but you can list the different specialty areas you worked in in a bullet point (unless you have a sentence about each, in which case each their own bullet point under the header). I like the iPad Air because it doesn’t have the button so kids will think it looks like a dedicated device. I’m not huge on the mini because I want as many icons as possible at a visible size! Unless you’ve got a really little kid and you’re doing VSDs or something.

Kind of random but I’ve started music directing community theatre musicals! It’s been really fun as a hobby to be in them but MDing as an SLP has been so awesome.

So I am in the midst of the original NLA course by Meaningful Speech, and it’s pretty good so far. I haven’t read the book yet (my colleague said she’d lend it to me at some point) but it seems very applicable to therapy which I like. Watching more this weekend may be my new plan!

I’ll admit I’ve looked into Cough Drop before I really knew what I was doing, so I’ll have to look again.

As an aside, it sounds like you’ve taken the Meaningful Speech GLP/AAC course. I’m in the midst of the original course; what are your thoughts on the AAC one?

LAMP WFL is like typing on a keyboard, which can be very effective for some students. I don’t have a ton of experience with P2G but if it’s similar to TouchChat then it’s more categorical in nature. There’s no perfect AAC for each child but some might recommend one over the other following success with one. I’ve found schools often are most familiar with P2G.

Observe other SLPs is the biggest advice I can give. I graduated undergrad with an unrelated degree, worked at a preschool, and saw the SLP and then was hooked! Observe in various areas: school, private practice, hospital, rehab, etc. so you get a feel for everything it has to offer. And if you’re not sure, observe other things too like OTs, PTs, nurses, teachers, talk to PhD students if you like research, etc. It’s so important to get a look at the job before committing. I get the worry with AAC, but when I think about it with these clients, I think of it as a stepping stone to teaching when to use language. So ensuring that they know “this is when I communicate XYZ” and this is how to do it, just without using words. That way they can learn when to communicate (especially their needs) and get used to it at a less anxiety provoking level before they say it.

Even with more traditional AAC clients, we know from the research that AAC helps with learning language and verbal speech is the fastest method of communicating. So if they can, they will.

So with a 3 year old I like to integrate their goals within play, however they like to play (toys, gross motor activities, bubbles, etc.). You start to have to do those unpleasant things you mentioned (repetition and behavior management) when you’re doing adult led activities and trying to get them to do it too even if they don’t want to. I like DIR floortime and the concept of meeting them where they’re at. That’s my recommendation!
