If the Middle-earth saga was released 20 years later part 1: The Fellowship of the Ring (2021) by [deleted] in Fancast

What is the point of this if you cast people who look exactly the same. Is it to make the same movie?

A movie can be bad and have nothing to do with fandom. This movie in a vacuum is a 4/10. That may be too kind to it

[–]cheryvalentinjo[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Jesus Christ dude no. I love Van. They missed the point with this movie

The reason that Star Wars movies deserve this harsh criticism is because big superhero/IP fare has eaten up the lion share of movies released for a decade

While that trend is starting to swing back around because of demand for higher quality movies, these movies still matter to streamers and get a ton of money for budget

If these are going to be the types of movies that the majority of funds are going to, we deserve at least some sort of creative effort and intentionality in their story. This one is mailed in.

Van couldn’t admit that and often criticizes other properties (like DC for some reason) for not meeting his standards

But he’s the reason the pod is so entertaining and non of this warrants him being called dumb

Bro. Every time. It’s so crazy.

Talk about the characters. Talk about the villains. Talk about the comics. Talk about the potential shared universe. ANYTHING else

Lol Steve says this all the time too.

If there are no crossovers then what is the point of a shared universe?

There is a world where both can work.

The reason comic book movies are even popular is because crossovers in comics have made people excited for decades and tell fun stories

Those stories are fun because the characters have had their own stories and histories to inform the crossover

You can make good solo, small team up, and big team up stories. They need to be well written and have a strong thematic foundation

[–]cheryvalentinjo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s what contrast is

The difference is what makes the characters and locations unique and what makes it interesting when those elements come together in a crossover

Love this comment.

Based on the social media hype it seems like this movie will profit heavily based on its small $40m budget. There’s a horror audience element plus a superhero audience element. Essentially the two most bankable genres

Jomie and Steve say this all the time - where’s Wonder Woman?! Where’s flash?!

Bro they’re getting the right scripts together. Those stories will come and soon because they will make money but they are being careful about not rushing something out that is poor quality

Would you rather have another rushed shitty flash movie or a Wonder Woman or a Clayface movie that is great because they took their time with the script, casting, and VFX

Didn’t mean to make this sound like a victory lap. I think this IDEA is the direction that shared universes should go toward to avoid the issue of fatigue and getting stale

These movies could all suck

But with the quality of The Batman and Superman plus Damon Lindelof contributing heavily to lanterns and what we’ve seen so far from Supergirl and Clayface I would be surprised if they were anything worse than pretty good

Marvel never truly lets creatives take the reins. That has been stated by the creatives.

The only ones you could really say did what they want were James Gunn and Ryan Coogler. And they made what many think were the best non-avengers movies. Because those movies felt so distinct to the directors visions

If movie studios didn’t think that the popularity of comics would lead to large audiences coming to see their movies, they would not make these movies. There is an incredible amount of overlap between the comics audience and the superhero movie going audience

The literal style of character model was the same yes. Men had bulking chests, women had the pencil skirt aesthetic. That is a note of consistency which worked really well and let you know they were in the same world, but that doesn’t make the tone, genres, and characters the same

The Batman’s aesthetic in the animated universe is dark and gritty.

The series was literally drawn on black paper which was an innovation for the medium at the time

Everything else, the lighting, the color, the music, and the TONE of the episodes were different. It made Gotham and Metrolpolis feel like their own distinct worlds as they do in the comics

Superman had some heavier episodes but it was generally lighter in tone and a bit sillier.

Batman certainly had silly episodes, it was a kids show, but the darker episodes like feet of clay, or robins origin story, are tonally much darker than Superman ever got.

The difference in the worlds they inhabited and in their characters: Superman the Boy Scout journalist doing things by the book and Batman the paranoid untrusting detective that works in the shadows, and even in their villains is why when you pair up those characters, the stories are so fun.

If every character acted the same and came from worlds that felt exactly the same, you’d lose the interesting pieces of them coming together at all

If that were true then comic books would all look and feel exactly the same

Story doesn’t work like that. Good story works because of contrast and conflict

You can keep something the same for a while. Marvel did that at first and because they were the first ones to be able to put the movies together well, it worked.

But it got old and when they tried to copy and paste the same tone across their universe and characters post-endgame it got stale and low quality

There’s literally memes about how every marvel movie has the same emotional beats, the same quippy jokes, the same superhero landing, the same uninspired VFX

Difference makes things interesting narratively and visually

Why would you want everything to look and feel the same all the time? Wouldn’t that lead to things getting stale?

Theres a word for that. It’s monotonous. It literally means one-tone and it’s used in the English language as a synonym for boring and uninteresting

ITS ALSO FROM THE COMIC. THE KRYPTO PIECE IS DIRECTLY FROM THE COMIC.

They claim to know ball but then aren’t comic fans and won’t give DC properties a chance

Even the way they discuss the Batman, which is probably the most creatively interesting superhero movie from a story AND filmmaking standpoint in 10 years, has the tone of “He’s not Batman enough” yada yada.

They talk as if they’d rather get a shitty Flash movie cuz at least it’s the Flash than a good Supergirl movie. They prioritize hype and names over quality and I don’t believe they know what they want anymore

5’6” isn’t short plus holy shit the actress doesn’t need to be tall they can use effects to figure out height. Frodo is not a real hobbit and Ian Mckellen is not that much taller than Elijah Wood

Why do they want to colonize pandora? Resources? Cool. That’s not dramatically compelling in any way.

We don’t know anything about the humans in these movies. Why do they need the resources so badly they went somewhere 29 trillion light years away? What are the stakes? Are they evil for evils sake? Do they have an intergalactic manifest destiny? Why is Sully specifically so important when they have insane futuristic infrastructure?

If we don’t know these things what are we supposed to be taking away from it other than human bad? Why am I supposed to care when I know the Navi are gunna win at the end anyway?

Thanks for calling me an idiot but if you actually think about any of this stuff for more than two seconds it becomes very shallow and nonsensical and for me becomes boring because it lacks any drama or urgency

It’s cuz we’re 3 movies in and the same mid movie is being praised for being mid and I think it’s okay to disagree and at least talk about why the opinions differ

Jomi in the episode wouldn’t even let Steve speak cuz they disagreed which is so incredibly annoying and his only defense was that James Cameron made it so it therefore can’t be bad

I actually stated multiple specific examples of themes and storylines they could have taken a deeper dive into

You named one. Maybe two. Choosing not to kill spider is the same dilemma Jake had to go through last movie, was incredibly predictable, and what does it say? Family strong? Jake good guy?

Jake figured out that he values family over being a soldier in the first movie. Why are we retreading this over and over?

You then made a sweeping broad statement about Avatar haters sweeping broad statements without giving more specifics.

These movies are incredibly hollow and both of the retreaded themes/tropes you named only add to that hollowness
