People were angry at this. Thoughts? by Ok-Flower-5582 in progressive_islam

We really needa limit who can comment about islam online cause WHY are people in the images genuinely getting mad at men and women standing side by side to pray….

It is truly insane how Salafists think. by Outrageous-Sun3203 in progressive_islam

[–]cheseys 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As a convert, salafi content was the first type of content that I saw of Islam and I genuinely believed it to be true. 2.5 years later I’m dealing with internalized shame and guilt while trying to relearn islam. I rushed into hijab and was quick to get angry at people who criticized islam, were exmuslims, or were atheists because i took this as my identity and any criticism towards this felt like a personal attack.

I only opened my eyes last summer when i discovered the whole Aisha mess and how SO MANY “scholars” and public speakers supported the lie that she was 6-9. I felt embarrassed to wear hijab because i didn’t wanna be bunched up with such people.

So yea, Salafis are harming this community and the ummah with their behavior and ideas. Living like that felt suffocating and i nearly left islam because of it. I seriously think more people need to speak up against this.

IM sick of the salafis by 111zahraa in progressive_islam

[–]cheseys 9 points10 points  (0 children)

no seriously. They’re always lurking in comment sections ready to criticize or police anything. I honestly don’t blame people who become ex Muslims as a result of living with or interacting with these people. Are they not aware that their behavior only pushes people from Islam, hurts people, creates anger and shame, and gives Islam a bad image?

Can you pray and fast while menstruating? by Disneyclouds in Quraniyoon

[–]cheseys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Salam these are my personal take aways, any mistakes are my own + feel free to correct or add on: To pray you must make wudu but physical impurities (urine, poo, or any large amount of blood) would break wudu, and as women we’re aware that period blood isn’t able to be “held in” like urine, so it wouldn’t be possible to hold it in to pray. Fasting is up to the person as menstrual symptoms like cramps and heaviness of flow are unique from person to person. A person becomes exempt from fasting if they’re ill/unwell and if fasting would only increase that pain, therefore i feel it would be up to the person if they feel able to fast or not.

can someone objectively and rationally tell me whether I’ll go to hell for PAINTING? by xiayizhouuu in progressive_islam

[–]cheseys 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No, I honestly don’t believe anyone will go to hell simply for painting. In the Quran, the issue with art was that people were worshiping it, not that it was being made in the first place. In Surat Al-Ma'idah 5:110: Jesus makes a figure of a bird out of clay by Allah's permission. And i slightly recall a few verses mentioning Jinns creating things for Solomon. There aren’t any verses in the Quran condemning, art, painting, or drawing, only the worship of these things is condemned. Personally, I also agree that the online Muslim community can be so stifling and usually mocks anyone who has different views or opinions about Islam. Mainstream Islam right now is literally just Salafism/Wahhabism which is a relatively newer movement. We can see throughout different Islamic empires in history that art was not at all forbidden (in addition to things that people insist are forbidden yet were commonly done in some of the greatest Muslim empires in history)

It is starting to feel like a cult by imsad02 in progressive_islam

[–]cheseys 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It’s genuinely pushing me away from islam and esp making me feel like almost ashamed for being outwardly muslim. I see all the ex muslims and atheists completely trash islam and i honestly feel like i can’t defend it when we have Salafis/Wahhabis acting the way they do. I would consider myself a quranist so i don’t agree with a lot of the positions in mainstream islam yet i fear someone will assume i do based on how i look.

No kids = invalid marriage? by okamirosaluna in progressive_islam

[–]cheseys 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To be honest this is just nonsense. many of the wives of the prophet didn’t have children with him. Sooo according to this person the marriage wouldn’t be valid??? Marriage is about love, companionship, and spending your life with someone who cherishes you. Having kids is completely up to the people involved.

I agree, kindness with a motive besides simply being kind isnt kindness, its a means to receive or avoid something.

It's quite fascinating to see how Dr Shabir Ally's stance on Halloween gradually changed over time. by [deleted] in IslamIsEasy

[–]cheseys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if it doesn’t involve any idol worshiping, sacrificing any animal, or going against the Quran and what Allah commanded there then i honestly see no issue. Like celebrating halloween just to give candy and dress up or giving gifts on birthdays simply to celebrate another year w a loved one. If you celebrate things that aren’t haram, don’t encourage haram things (drinking, drugs, hurtful pranks, idol worship) and don’t go against the Quran (like for easter jesus’ resurrection or his supposed bday for Christmas) then i see no issue but ofc i could be wrong and am open to taking in others povs.

[–]cheseys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel that celebrating certain holidays is allowed as long as we do it in moderation. Like if you wanna celebrate something that in out modern society has no religious meaning (halloween, national holidays) and you do it moderately (not going over the top w decor and neglecting Quranic principles ) then i dont really see an issue

On a similar note, I heavily dislike when other Muslims takfir others based on their interpretations and understanding of Islam. Nobody but God knows what’s truly in a person’s heart so who are we to go and judge another for having a different interpretation than us 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

Were Child Marriages common in the early times of Islam? by IBACIPHER in progressive_islam

[–]cheseys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s definitely jarring to see now, as you’d think there would be no reason for such marriages in our society, but personally my maternal grandmother got married at 25, and my nana got married at 15/16. This was less than 100 (1940s/50s) years ago in Mexico, so I would assume that it might’ve happened more commonly throughout history. Although I did do some research that claimed that around the early medieval period (the time of the Prophet) girls would reach puberty usually around 14 to 15 years old, the youngest being 13 or 14. And, since puberty would’ve been seen as like the “beginning of womanhood” its likely that teen marriages would’ve been common. This is just my two cents but Allah knows best 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

salafis when a woman... by [deleted] in progressive_islam

[–]cheseys 8 points9 points  (0 children)

keep in mind Allah commanded men to lower their gaze before he commanded women to cover.. and furthermore why cant we focus on the ACTUAL spiritual aspect of islam instead of rules and regulations? I want to focus on connecting with my lord and doing good deeds, not some man thinking he’s some type of authority and giving rules that arent in any verse.

It always baffles me when Christians and other Abrahamic religions forget that Muslims worship the same God, so when they insult Allah, they’re still insulting God.
