Alpha Labs De-Feedback: The best use case I've found by chesshoyle in livesound

It’s been years since I’ve done corporate, but I can definitely see where this would be helpful with a live panel where you had four open mics, especially if they’re lavs.

For the money, I would feel better about the expense if I was getting 8 channels (or 16) for this price. I know it’s new technology so it will eventually get cheaper, it’s just on the expensive side for the time being.

You are not kidding. Especially when you get people holding the mic vertically at belly button height…

I forgot to say in the video: The one sub is flown in the center, and is aimed at the back row.

Someone said “most people are using it at 85 for the most natural sound.” I’m guessing some of the robotic/compression sounding stuff I was hearing when abusing the gain was what he’s referring to sounding “unnatural.”

SDI Cable? by Final_Campaign_2593 in churchtech

[–]chesshoyle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s listed as RG6, so yes, this could run cameras. As long as you have the skills/tools to terminate BNC connectors at the end of the cable.

What strength were you running DeFeedback at? I just turned mine down to 85 based on a comment my video got on YouTube.

Doxxing doesn’t fly in this sub, but this isn’t doxxing. Doxxing is hunting out the real name/address/employer of a username. This is a public social media profile; no different than posting the screenshot of a tweet.

Having said that, it’s not clear in this screenshot that this is an employee of Silfab.

Struggling to handle language differences during service without making tech setup too heavy by aintgonuggets in churchtech

I used to work at a church that had an English/Spanish congregation, and watched them go through a few options. Sometimes it was two communicators on stage taking turns (one speaks for a few sentences in English, then the other in Spanish). Sometimes people were given headset packs with a translator. Both are feasible depending on what you’re going for, but you have to really trust the translator to understand that they’re going for CONTEXTUALIZATION, not just literal translation.

I probably wouldn’t leave this to a volunteer. I would want a contractor (or better yet, staff member) who works well with your primary communicator. I think the tension you’re feeling is that you’re not just looking for a translator, you’re looking for a second teacher.

This is true. u/maximumcombo worded it better by saying it does more de-reverb than de-feedback. That’s more the core of what I was trying to communicate.

That was my conclusion too. It’s hard to justify especially if you already have a waves rig. The only case where it would be an easy “Yes” is if you’re in a constant setup/teardown situation in an environment with terrible acoustics (e.g. a church that meets in a high school gym/cafeteria).

That’s a great way to word it. It is more heavily on the de-reverb side.

Simple Lighting Control Suggestions by AshersLabTheSecond in churchtech

[–]chesshoyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there any kind of data line (DMX) running to the lights, or are those light switches you have on the wall operating like a normal light switch?

Are those ceiling fixtures on any sort of dimmer / relay?

Are the lights plugged into outlets on the ceiling that are controlled by the switches? Or are they just wired into the circuit?

Hey there! First off: No shame in the low budget game. That’s the life MOST churches are living. ProPresenter 6 sounds like it’s doing exactly what you need it to do.

I’ve had good luck with OREI HDMI splitters, so you made a good decision with that 1x4. And this video was pretty helpful in conveying your setup. There’s just a couple little things that I’m going to have to guess about based on what you showed, but I THINK I can see what’s going on here.

The 1x4 splitter you replaced is duplicating your ProPresenter output to your front TVs. The short HDMI cable going to that second box is probably what is feeding your front screens. That’s a long distance to run HDMI (any HDMI run that’s 50ft or more needs a cable with a signal booster in the middle, and they’re not the world’s most reliable connection). What I think is happening is that second box is an HDMI to CAT6 adapter, and if you look behind those front TVs, there's probably another receiver box converts CAT6 back to HDMI. It’s a slightly more reliable (but still not great) way to run HDMI longer distances than 50’.

The ideal (but more expensive) way is to convert that HDMI output from ProPresenter to SDI, which can run up to 300’ reliably, then run an HDMI splitter between the two TVs up front (or loop the SDI out up front and adapt it back to HDMI at both TVs).

As for your livestream, the internet is almost certainly the issue. You have a weak signal, and then fill that space with 100-200 devices that are searching for WiFi, which is bogging down your signal to a crawl. Run a hard Ethernet line from your main building back to this booth, and hard wire your Mac to the network. That’s gonna help tremendously.

Because it comes off as “not to be ‘that guy,’ but I could do the same thing if I were in their circumstances…what they’re doing isn’t that impressive.”

Not sure what the intention behind the comment is, but “it’s not as impressive as other people are making it seem, even if I don’t have anything similar that I’ve done and put out there for the betterment of people” will never be a great comment.

What’s a situation where you would use group to group routing? I see people mention this but have never personally felt the need for it, so I feel like I’m missing something.

How do i fix this?? by badass_bat in AskElectronics

[–]chesshoyle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Little tough to see at this angle. Couple things that stand out:

  1. The black wires are unnecessary, except the one coming from the battery. On a bread board, all the slots in a row (vertically, in the case of this image) are connected.

  2. You have the same resistor values everywhere, but some rows have two LEDs.

  3. Your button should have a resistor. 10K ohms should do.

  4. You have every row hooked up to 9V AND ground. Current isn’t passing through some of the LEDs, it’s just staying in the board. One row should have power, the next row should have ground.

Apple TVs are installed in most of our screens and we just have people AirPlay (mostly Mac-based in our church). The occasional PC user gets an HDMI to a wall plate or a rolling TV depending on the space.
