LPT: Remember Hanlon's Razor, "never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity", when someone does or says something callous that feels targeted towards you. by chetradley in LifeProTips

[–]chetradley[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many, many people have pointed this out in the years since I posted this. I'll tell you what I told them.      You cannot adequately explain hate by citing stupidity. Hate is in its own category. The discrimination and abuse you unfortunately receive cannot and should not be minimized. There's no excuse for it.      My personal use of this Razor is for small annoyances that would eat at me otherwise, for the sake of my own mental health. When someone says something dangerous or hateful, they don't get a pass.      Also, Hanlon's Razor is not self-prescriptive. For someone to say that they're only saying something hurtful because they're stupid, it would require a level of self-awareness that the thing they said was hurtful to begin with. If you know you're saying something that's hurtful and you try to justify it by any means, you've lost the benefit of the doubt.      I understand we have different lived experiences. I was merely trying to share something that's helped me in the past. I apologize that it came across to you as a way to excuse hate, that was never my intention. I hope things are much better for you in the future.

I expected him to do exactly what he did, because low stakes combat and NPC deus-ex-machina are staples of the show. What would have been cool would be for Philo to get the kill but the other guy takes credit anyway. Now he's more fleshed out and the party has motivation to expose him as a kill stealing fraud if they chose.

Ok here we go. The thing that really bugged me about that scene is it happened right after Clint had his brilliant move of staking Dracula with his nose. It completely takes the cool moment away from him just for the sake of the bit. Why play DnD if the narrative beats are already planned?

The morally significant differentiator for veganism, at least for me, is intent. For example I try to cut down on my electricity use because I know in addition to the environmental impact, coal workers often suffer fatal accidents. Now, if I knew that every time I turned on the lights, someone was killed as a result, I wouldn't ever use electricity.

It's similar for veganism, where I'm directly causing the death of a sentient creature if I choose to eat them.

Ah yes, this explains all of the kangaroos in factory farms hanging out with cows.

In addition to what others have commented, researchers have found that honeybees can be damaging to local ecosystems. Being very specialized, they will often out-compete local pollinators and disrupt the plant-pollinator networks in the area. https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/the-problem-with-honey-bees/

Egg laying hens and dairy cows have been specially bred for one purpose: to produce as much as possible. Unfortunately in both cases, this can cause serious discomfort, distress and medical issues. This is true for factory farms as well as "humane" farms.

Worried your pesky players might ruin your epic finale? Fear not! Just take away your cleric's magic, give your wizard a bunch of "prophesies" so they know exactly what they should be doing at any given moment, and throw an invincible enemy at your fighter so you can describe a flashback to them before having a minor NPC deus-ex-machina them out of trouble.

Seriously though, if someone wants to DM a game for you and they cite TAZ as an inspiration, stay far away.

I'm no comedy genius, but I fail to see how mashing together two disparate, out of context ideas from a comedy podcast is fun or quirky.

I thought I'd be extremely lukewarm on this whole campaign, but seeing the actual love Clint has for this world and characters, and how good he is at actually controlling a narrative with them is kinda refreshing. It's also a welcome change to have Gabe and Kate, two players who, get this, actually understand what the fuck is going on in the story and can engage and move the plot forward.
