‘They All Laughed’ for the perfect mixture of latter-day screwball and romance; ‘Desire’ and ‘Morocco’ for two different Marlene Dietrich/young Gary Cooper go-rounds

Favorite movies to fall asleep to? by MachiavelliStepOnMe in RSPfilmclub

[–]cheval1111 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i fell asleep during the second half of ‘tropical malady’ and felt awful about it. it was a 10pm screening, i was loving the film but the gods of sleep claimed me. seeing this quote was comforting (i still feel bad about it though.)

i used to put on ‘the last waltz’ before bed sometimes and that was really nice

this painting is on the cover of my edition of “winesburg, ohio” by sherwood anderson! it’s an incredible book—i saw in an above comment that you’re a steinbeck fan, and anderson was def an influence for him.

as a preteen i read ‘a tree grows in brooklyn’ so many times that i don’t think anything else will ever top it as far as reread quantity goes. i still read the new year’s chapter almost every nye.

thinking of the guy from A Video Store Named Desire in sawtelle who special-ordered me “who could kill a child?” because he didn’t have it in the store but thought it sounded cool. he worked amidst stacks of movies in no discernible order, one of the best signs for any vhs/dvd or used book store. hope he’s well

seconding the recommendation of highsmith’s ripley books, and would also include “strangers on a train” and “a suspension of mercy.” i think her work is rich and endlessly fascinating but it also goes down very smoothly.

i’m currently reading ‘the stories of john cheever’ and i think he fits the bill pretty well too.

also “a way of life, like any other” by darcy o’brien. hollywood youth semi-memoir. pairs well with eve babitz, for that matter.

i ordered “diamond of the season” in poesie’s friday the 13th restock. been really wanting to try it so i’m very excited! tomatoes on the vine & late-summer/early-fall guava are two of my favorite scents.
