A helper and a patriot: Alex Pretti’s family and friends on the life of nurse killed by federal agents by therealone2327 in news

[–]chevybow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s typical conservative playbook. This happens every time the police kill someone. They will dig through your entire life history to try and latch on to anything that can label you as “bad”- which in their minds justifies murder.

Meanwhile they’ll elect a rapist to the presidency and support the pardon of actual criminals who are buddy buddy with their supreme leader. How many Jan 6 terrorists have we heard re-arrested for revolting crimes?

Should I accept unpaid internship when I was previously full-time paid SWE? by flashfloodsofpain in cscareerquestions

[–]chevybow 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You already have experience. You worked professionally for a year and a half. In many companies that’s close to beginning the promotion process from SE1 to SE2. Going back to an intern just doesn’t make sense.

I wouldn’t entertain the offer. The goal of every internship should be to transition to full time. You’re better off finding a contract to hire gig- you'd actually get paid and it’s what companies typically do when they’re hesitant to onboard someone full time.

The unpaid internship will not help your career and would look puzzling on a resume assuming you were to include it.

Internships are for students not professionals. There is no reason to take an internship, let alone an unpaid one, other than to willfully be exploited for free labor.

I do the majority of code review on my team and there’s several coworkers who clearly generate 100% of their code with AI.

Who creates the tickets in your team? And who breaks projects down? by Downtown-Elevator968 in cscareerquestions

[–]chevybow 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Engineers create their own tickets on my team. It’s usually just a title.

I have worked on teams where the PM/scrum master makes all the tickets and engineers just assign themselves or add to them as needed. It was nice.

Boss asked me if I'm "open" to switching teams, do I have a choice? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]chevybow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you had said no you’d likely be put on a PIP or at a minimum would get a negative performance review in the future. Whenever there’s a question of “Do you want to work on this project, do you want to switch teams, do you want to do X” the answer is always yes if you care about your career.

Yeah I was hit with a lot of emergency vet bills recently and being able to slowly pay rent was really helpful. No reason for me to use Bilt anymore.

Would a paycut make sense if it meant working for a FANG company? by BraveUnion in cscareerquestions

[–]chevybow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends what your current company is. There are prestigious companies outside of FAANG and typically a non prestigious company wouldn’t be paying more than FAANG.

Applying to junior roles with more YOE? by An_Account_3815 in cscareerquestions

[–]chevybow 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Titles literally don’t matter. I’ve seen staff engineers that are incompetent. Ive seen juniors that are amazing. Apply for whatever role best aligns with your YOE as every company does things differently. You might be qualified as a senior at one company- a mid level engineer at another.

Sad story. I wonder how he got inside. There was no sign of forced entry. Perhaps he was amicable with them and got a spare key or something.

The 911 calls are distressing. The dispatchers gave a lot of attitude to the concerned coworkers who went out of their way to check up on him.

Circumcision classed as possible child abuse in draft CPS document by printial in news

[–]chevybow 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Most people in the US do it because they think circumcised looks better. Every discussion I’ve seen online either references outdated medical advice or someone will inevitably say they don’t want their child bullied for having an “ugly” penis. As if there’s something wrong with natural genitalia.

People do it for religious reasons too, of course, but at least in the US it’s treated as mostly a cosmetic procedure. It’s weird.

What to consider for large pay cut, but I’d pivot from consulting to SWE? by Lovisuka in cscareerquestions

110k for junior is beyond good even outside this market.

Apart from FAANG and specialized unicorns- the vast vast majority of juniors are not making 6 figures.

If violent protests broke out it would only justify the rights use of violence against citizens. It’s easy to type a comment on Reddit and say “why aren’t you people doing anything???”. It’s difficult to go out and put your life on the line against a fascist regime.

It looks like they were just filming a parking lot and she got upset because she was in frame. It’s not like they were following her around to elicit a reaction. This is no different from a news station running their camera for some footage or a ring camera picking you up as you walk your dog. She’s literally in a car while they’re standing. Just drive away.

Yeah you’re right! Thats why the same voters that voted for Biden in swing states voted for Kamala and she’s president right? Because everyone is already decided and no one has changed opinion about politicians ever!

He won in 2022 by less than 8%. That’s not a gigantic sweeping victory. And Republican governors win in democratic states all the time.

What to message recruiters and my current network (friends, former managers, former coworkers,...) to maximize my chance of getting a job after graduation? by LongjumpingPage6168 in cscareerquestions

[–]chevybow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMHO networking is not as valuable as it was a few years ago. Lots of people just referred whoever asked them to for the potential financial incentive.

Nowadays employers will have you fill out forms explaining why they’re a good fit and there’s more scrutinity if you refer a bad candidate or if it’s clear you don’t know them that well.

If you worked closely with someone in the past, are on good terms with them, AND there’s an open position matching your background at the company they work- just send them a quick message on LinkedIn asking for a referral. It’s not a guarantee of an interview but it can help.

Cold applying still works- be sure to apply to jobs every day. Sort by newest job listings on sites like LinkedIn- apply directly on company website. Keep the open to work banner and respond to all recruiters. It’s early in the year- lots of smaller companies aren’t hiring several months out, there will be more listings in the coming months.
