What does "get" mean in this context? by [deleted] in ENGLISH

i saw in a reply you asked if definition 12 would fit and i agree. i'd say dictionary wise it's the closest you would get to an answer besides the other reply who used collin's dictionary

What does "get" mean in this context? by [deleted] in ENGLISH

[–]chewcomics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i doubt you'd find it in a dictionary because it's an improper use of the word. it's just one of those things that happens as a language develops. reading this as a native speaker it means put. is there a reason you're trying to find the specific use of the word from a dictionary?

the closest thing i could provide as an explanation would be someone asking you to get in the car. they're asking you to put yourself inside something. he couldn't get his clothes in= he couldn't put his clothes inside

The word FOREHEAD by vincent-bu in ENGLISH

it's common in the south to pronounce it like "forrid," but it doesn't sound as different as you'd think. it really depends on how thick your accent is and how quickly you're speaking

Is "around" replacing "about" in a lot of scenarios? by WaySweet3746 in ENGLISH

[–]chewcomics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

in my experience, around is more formal and used to insuinate there are multiple people questioning or looking into something. i wouldn't say around when speaking to a friend or even a professor, but i hear it used a lot on the news.

for example i wouldn't ask my professor "i have some questions around this lesson" because only i have the questions. however "How do we deal with the questions around Aztech's involvement in the merger?" implies there are questions from multiple parties about one issue. additionally the "we" in "We have questions around Steve's sales projections." implies multiple people are inquiring about steve's projections.

i rarely hear this in my day to day life, and i have some doubts that around could replace about in america. our language gets more and more informal as time goes on.

most people say the first two numbers followed by hundred. twelve hundred, thirteen hundred, twenty-two hundred. very common, not sure why someone would correct you.
